Alice Jean Waters died peacefully in her sleep on April 23, 2016 at the age of 88. She was born December 5, 1927 in Mobile, AL to Edna Logsdon Zepp and Russell C. Zepp.
She lived most of her life in Pensacola and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1946.
She married James McCoy Waters in 1947. They had two daughters, Elaine and Margaret, and were married almost 65 years when James died in 2011.
Jean worked for Gulf Life Insurance Company prior to the birth of her children and then at the Escambia County Sheriff's Office from 1961 to 1970, retiring there as the Secretary to the Sheriff. She later worked for approximately 4 years at the Escambia County School Board.
In 1976, she and James moved to Clear Springs, AL and settled on land that had been in her husband's family for generations. There, among horses, rabbits, goats, peacocks, cats and dogs, she provided a warm and loving atmosphere for her family and friends. James & Jean had a small garden and Jean, who was a wonderful cook, canned fruits and vegetables. She participated in a quilting circle at Clear Springs United Methodist Church and made many lovely quilts and wall hangings. She took up oil painting and produced beautiful landscapes of the surrounding countryside.
Jean and James travel all over the United States and spent some of that time doing genealogy research. Both wrote family histories and Jean also wrote a biography of her grandmother, Sylvia Bowen Logsdon, her uncle Robert "Bobby" Logsdon and her husband's aunt, Vivian Waters. She also wrote her own autobiography called, "Looking Back."
The couple traveled to the Holy Land in 1984 and created a slide show presentation of various holy sites that they shared with Sunday school classes & other church groups.
Jean was an active member of the United Methodist Church and served for a time on the Missions Board and as President of the United Methodist Women's group at her church in Gonzalez, FL. When she and James moved back to Pensacola in 2004, they joined Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband James, a wonderful mother to her two daughters and an active and loving grandmother to her three grandchildren, Ryan, Megan and Matthew.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James M. Waters; her parents, Russell and Edna Zepp; her brothers, R.C. Zepp, and Robert Zepp.
She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Waters (Mike) Maney and Margaret "Maggie" Waters (Mike) Feldman; her grandchildren, James Ryan Maney, Megan Feldman (Adam) Queen and Matthew Feldman & his fiancé, Melanie Cox; her great grandchildren, Tristan Putonti, Alex McCoy Maney, Lezlie Jean Maney & Piper Ann Queen; her sister, Shirley Gordon and her brothers, Richard "Dick" Zepp Sr. and Doug "Tommy" Zepp Sr.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 10:00 am at Cokesbury United Methodist Church on 9th Avenue. Pastor Paul Wolfe will officiate. A viewing and visitation will precede the ceremony at 9:00 am. Private Family Burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the missions program or youth programs at Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
