June 12, 1947 – December 4, 2024
Allan Arnold Benton, 77, of Pensacola, FL passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at home, Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Allan was born on June 12, 1947, to Gertrude Arnold and A. Hicks Arnold in Birmingham, AL. She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1967 with a degree in Physical Education and Theater Arts. She married Philip C. Benton on June 14, 1969. Her early career was with the Y.M.C.A. in Birmingham, AL and in Charleston, NC. Allan and Phil moved to Scotland upon Phil's completion of his medical internship and joined the U.S. Navy.
While living in Washington, D.C., Allan earned a degree in Interior Design at Mount Vernon College and Phil finished his residency in Orthopedics. Allan and Phil eventually made their home in Pensacola as Phil completed his tour at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Allan continued her career as an interior designer and was a member of ASID, eventually owning her own design firm, and later entering into a successful secondary career in commercial real estate investment.
She continued her interest in the arts and philanthropy, supporting many organizations such as: Pensacola Ballet and Pensacola Opera as both a donor and board member; a member of the Arts Counsel; early supporter of both the Belmont-DeVilliers Art Center and the First City Art Center, and an original organizer of their Annual Pumpkin Patch event. Allan was also an original member of the Anna Society at Pensacola State College; a sponsor and volunteer for the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival; and an original member of Sunday's Child. She also cared deeply for Alabama Public Radio, Feeding the Gulf Coast, and WUWF 88.1 FM Radio.
Allan is preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and Hicks; brother, Skip Arnold, and her former husband and devoted friend, Dr. Philip C. Benton.
She leaves behind many beloved friends and her devoted dog, George. She will be sorely missed by all she supported in life.
