Obituary

Allen Brewton Edwards, 43, died on Friday, April 29, 2011 ending his three year battle with cancer of the brain, infection, wound closure, and chronic fatigue. Born in Pensacola on May 22, 1967, Allen was a true son of Pensacola and Escambia County, cherishing family legacies of the Edwards, Pfeiffer, and Brewton families of Pensacola and McDavid, FL. Growing up in the East Hill section of Pensacola, Allen graduated from East Hill Christian School, Washington High School, and the University of West Florida. While at UWF he worked in the Computer Sciences Department's computer lab debugging many technical problems, helping many other students along their educational path. Following graduation from UWF Allen was employed as a database administrator with the Florida Department of Transportation. For 18 years his dedication and many overtime hours ensured the integrity of the state's transportation data. Work was Allen's utmost priority and, following disability retirement, his sole desire was to return to his desk at FDOT. Whether jamming with the Apalachee Blues Society, enjoying target practice at the Tallahassee Rifle and Pistol Club, or simply hanging out at the Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola Allen's avocations were extensions of his technical interests. Allen was a story teller in the true Old South tradition, a trait learned after countless hours listening to the telling and retelling of stories by grandparents and uncles. Treasured times were those spent with dad and uncles John and Harry Edwards recounting numerous WWII adventures. Allen is preceded in death by is his father, Thomas W. E. Edwards, Sr, and his faithful beagle Kopper. Surviving Allen is his mother, Frances Brewton Edwards and his brother, Woody Edwards. The family thanks the many people and institutions who have helped Allen these three years--Sacred Heart Health Systems, West Florida Rehabilitation Institute, Tulane University Hospital, Winn-Dixie Pharmacy, Medi-Home Health Care, Covenant Hospice, and many friends and family. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm, Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A reception following the service will occur in the Fellowship Hall at St. Mark United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 2203 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32503 or Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32504.
