IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ann Towers
Stone
September 25, 1938 – August 14, 2020
On Friday, August 14, 2020, Ann Stone, wonderful wife and traveling companion of Bob Stone, mother of two boys and proud grandmother of four amazing grandchildren, passed away due to complications from cancer at the age of 81.
Ann was born on September 25, 1938, in Mobile, AL to Fred and Virginia Towers. Soon after, they moved to Columbus, OH where she spent her childhood - raised by her mother and grandmother after her father died in a car accident. She earned a bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA. On June 11, 1960, she married Robert L. Stone who she met at nearby Washington & Lee University. After Bob entered a law practice in Pensacola, FL, they raised two sons, Duncan and Mike. Ann was a housewife and volunteer in the Pensacola community for 61 years. She was on the boards of many civic organizations, including the Pensacola Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, served as President of the Escambia-Santa Rosa Bar Association Auxiliary and was a longtime member of the Junior League of Pensacola. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in downtown Pensacola, serving as a church elder since 1998.
Ann lived a full and meaningful life inspired by her love of food, travel, reading and art. She was recognized as a notable local artist with a gift for capturing the serenity of swaying sea oats or a graying Gulf Coast sky at the edge of an impending storm. One of her paintings was selected to hang in the Florida Governor's mansion with work from other regional Florida artists.
Ann and Bob were adventurous travelers. Over the years, they hiked through the Italian Alps three times, soared over the Virginia countryside in a hot air balloon and even braved an arrested carrier landing and catapult take-off as guests of a Navy admiral. Together, they loved to tour the castles of Scotland and England and spend quality time with Ann's many English relatives.
Ann was equally adventurous in the kitchen with a passion for exploring gourmet recipes and sharing new dishes with family and friends. She was a voracious reader and could often be found engrossed in a bestseller or British mystery.
Throughout her life, Ann was considered to be a dear and loyal friend by many, including the wives of Bob's three brothers and the "Lunch Bunch" - a group of close friends who gathered every month for over 30 years.
Ann is preceded in death by her father, Fred, and her mother, Virginia.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bob; her two sons, Duncan and Michael; and her four grandchildren, Emily, Sarah, Robert and Spencer.
A memorial service was held by her immediate family.
Donations in her name may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
