Obituary

Arlene B. DeVries went home to be with her Lord Sunday, December 6, 2020.

Arlene was born on September 1, 1933, and grew up on a farm as the youngest of eleven children in Hamilton, MI.  At age twelve she became a city girl, moving with her family to Holland, MI, and attended Holland High School. She, along with her family, attended Central Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Holland, and it was there she met her future husband.

After marrying Pete in 1950, they moved to East Lansing, Michigan in 1955, where Pete attended Michigan State University. In 1961 they moved to Pensacola, FL. As a long time member at McIlwain Presbyterian Church, she was very active as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, choir member, President of the Women of the church and cook for many Wednesday night dinners. She also volunteered at Sacred Heart Hospital.  Arlene had the gift of hospitality and hosted many missionaries, out of town guests, and family gatherings. She was an active member of the Civinettes (ladies associated with the Civitan Club). She enjoyed playing bridge and dominoes with her close friends, all kinds of games with her children and grandchildren, and was an excellent cook. Arlene loved to travel in their motorhome and visited many states in the U.S. She also enjoyed trips to Barbados and Europe, especially the Czech Republic and Turkey.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Helen Brower, all six brothers, and three of her sisters.

Arlene was a loving, godly wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and is survived by her husband of 70 years, Peter, and sons Dr. Douglas DeVries, (Kristin), James DeVries, (Jeanette), and Rev. Scott DeVries, (Christine); three granddaughters, Rachel D. Dasher (Mike), Ashley B. DeVries (Gerrod), and Laura D. Rich (Shannon); four grandsons, Logan DeVries (Ginger), Benjamin DeVries, Joseph DeVries, and Nathan DeVries; four great grandchildren, Daniel Dasher, Jackson Rich, Ashlyn DeVries, and Ansley DeVries; her sister, Marge Horn and sister-in-law, Mary Brower. She will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 10:00am until a Memorial Service at 11:00am Saturday, December 12, 2020 at McIlwain Presbyterian Church with Pastor Rob Looper officiating. All attendees are strongly encouraged to wear mask.

Arlene's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Emerald Coast Hospice for the excellent, loving care she received from the hospice nurses (especially Deanna Walton) they provided.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a contribution to Emerald Coast Hospice, your favorite missionary, or to the Presbyterian Church in America's Mission to the World (MTW).
