Augustus Eugene Gene Collins, Jr., 81, of Pace, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2010 in the care of Joyce Goldenberg Covenant Hospice. Gene was born in New Boston, Ohio, on August 17, 1929 and has resided in the Pensacola area since 1963. He was preceded in death by his wife of 16 years, Patricia Ann Collins; his wife of 23 years, Doris Rogers Collins; and his sister, Janet Marie Taylor. Gene is survived by his wife, Martha Erika Collins; five children, John R. Collins, David E. Collins, Catherine A. Mendez, Karen L. Lenzo and Mark C. Collins; four step children, Janet D. Singleterry, Cynthia C. Hermann, Angela L. Crenshaw and Katherine M. Orgeron; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Gene was a lifelong public educator earning a B.S.Ed., Ohio University in 1962, and a M.Ed, (Science - Math - Physics) Texas A&M University in 1964, teaching for 43 years. Gene's loving dedication and devotion was not only for his family, but also for the community and the thousands of his students. His teaching assignments in the Pensacola Public Schools included Science at Warrington Jr. High, co-founder of the countywide Program for Academically Talented Students (PATS), and as an adjunct instructor in Physical Science, Computer math and language programming, Industrial Physics, Photography and Astronomy at Pensacola Jr. College. Memorial Services will be held 11:00am Monday, October 25, 2010 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Pensacola, FL.
