Dearmond
June 4, 1924 – July 9, 2025
Barbara O'Neill DeArmond, 101, formerly of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Barbara was born on June 4, 1924, in Burlington, TX. Following graduation in 1941 she worked as a secretary to the County Judge of Milam County, in Cameron TX, and later as a radio operator at the Radio Range Station with the Civil Aeronautics Administration in Brownsville, TX. She soloed as a pilot in 1943 and hoped to start training as a Women's Auxiliary Service Pilot in World War II. She met Velfort J. DeArmond, Jr., an Air Corps pilot returning from overseas after escaping from a prisoner of war camp. He was stationed nearby when he visited Barbara's workplace. They met and were married five months later in Brownsville, TX. This was the beginning of more than 30 years as a military wife, living in Japan during the Occupation, Washington, D.C Tripoli, Libya, Montana, Utah, and Colorado.
While living in the Washington D.C. area she was secretary to a branch manager. She was a caring and loving wife and mother. She loved being a homemaker and raising her family. During those years she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Red Cross volunteer. When they retired in 1971, they moved to Pensacola. Here she was a teacher's aide for children with learning disabilities, and a member of the Military Officers Wives and Widows Association. She loved her church and was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Pensacola, FL.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Col. Velfort J. DeArmond, Jr. USAF (ret.) and son, David Glynn DeArmond.
She is survived by her son, Barry Michael DeArmond of Salem, OR and many nieces and nephews.
