Obituary

Barbara Susan Elbert, 80, passed away in her sleep on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Azalea Trace, which was her residence for the past five years.

Barbara was born in Louisville, KY on September 15, 1935 to Vincent Herbert Jarboe and Julia Belle Leachman Jarboe.
Barbara was the first of eleven siblings in the Jarboe family which consisted of seven girls and four boys.

Barbara attended high school at Mercy Academy in Louisville, graduating in 1953. By that time she had fallen in love with a young engineering student, Theodore F. Elbert III, and one week after her graduation, she and Theo were married. That union lasted 64 years.

After Theo's graduation from engineering school, Barbara became a Navy wife as Theo commenced flight training at Pensacola. In 1956 the family, consisting now of Barbara, Theo and 1year old Steve, moved to Brunswick, ME, Theo's first duty station.

In 1958 the family, consisting now of Barbara, Theo, Steve and Larry moved to Cincinnati, OH, as Theo transferred to the Naval Reserve and took a job at General Electric. In 1961 the family, consisting now of Barbara, Theo, Steve, Larry and Mark moved to Santa Barbara, CA, as Theo went to work with General Motors.

1961 saw the last of the family's moves, as Theo took a job as a Professor at the University of West Florida. Barbara immediately assumed the task of a faculty wife, becoming involved in the various social activities of university life.

The family settled in Gulf Breeze, where they remained until moving to Azalea Trace in 2011. In Gulf Breeze, Barbara was involved in many activities. She was a long term member of the Gulf Breeze Woman's Club, serving in virtually every elected office. She was most proud of her leadership in the club's development of the "Gulf Breeze Sign", which is in the median of Highway 98 at the entrance to Gulf Breeze.

Barbara was a wonderful human being, a faithful wife, a caring mother and an adoring grandmother. Her beautiful smile would light up any room the minute she walked in. At Azalea Trace, where she spent the last five years of her life, she was extremely popular.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Theo and 4 sons; Stephen Allen (Lisa), Lawrence Dale, Timothy Frederick (Shelly) and Mark David (Maureen); sisters, Charry, Gayle, Linda, Michelle and Judy; brothers, Vincent, Gary and Richard and 4 grandchildren.

Predeceasing her are a sister, Jackie and brother, Denis.

Barbara's ashes are, according to her wishes, inurned at Barrancas National Cemetery.

A Celebration of Barbara's life will be held at the Azalea Trace auditorium at 3:00pm on Saturday, June 11, 2016.
