Our Mother left this life peacefully, in her sleep, surrounded by her children and by angels - her parents and brother-who greeted her joyously and escorted her to Heaven. Barbara was born in De Funiak Springs, Florida, and grew up there and in New Orleans, Louisiana, before settling in Pensacola in 1955. She attended Pensacola High School and Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University in New Orleans where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She was active in many social organizations through high school and college and afterwards including the Mardi Gras krewes of Merrymakers and Revelers of Ariola and the Pensacola Junior League. She loved to learn and for many years studied environmental science, religion, philosophy, astronomy, anthropology and psychology at Pensacola Junior College and the University of West Florida, attending classes into her late 70's, and was a member of Nomads, a women's group devoted to research and cultural learning. She enjoyed tennis and boating and she hiked part of the Appalachian and Old Spanish Trails. She and her family are members of Christ Episcopal Church. She also loved to travel and visited Europe, Belize and China. She had great tenacity and was not often swayed by societal norms. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting, drawing, drafting and sculpture. She obtained a certificate to teach art and taught in Pace, Florida. She loved the natural world and the view from her favorite chair and her yard never failed to bring her peace and happiness. But of all these things, her greatest love was her family, to whom she was extraordinarily committed, loyal and devoted. She is survived by her sister, her son and four daughters, their father, her eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She wanted to be remembered by the saying "from the stars we came and to the stars we return". In lieu of sending flowers, Barbara would have preferred that donations be made to the Pensacola Humane Society based on her strong love of animals and willingness to accommodate them. A private family service will be held at a later date. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Amos Prevatt, Dr. Warren Herron and other attending physicians and our extended family, the staff of The Haven of Our Lady of Peace and especially to those of Heritage Court who gave much love and support. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
