Obituary

Barbara Ann Roe, 79, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

Barbara was born August 21, 1944, in Washington, DC, to Lionel and Cecile Shepherd. After WWII, the family moved to Indianapolis, IN. Barbara was home schooled until the sixth grade due to life-threatening childhood illnesses. Recovering, she would later join the Girl Scouts, even earning Boy Scout rifle team badges, long before women's opportunities would expand.

Barbara graduated from Howe High School in 1962. While working at Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals in Indianapolis, Barbara met her future husband, Earl, at her sister's wedding in Virginia. Barbara and Earl, a Navy Submarine Sailor, married on November 7,1963. The couple then began a 20-year career as a military family, having three daughters along the way. Many deployments for Earl and lots of child-rearing time awaited Barbara. Barbara became an expert as home seamstress, crochet specialist, scout leader, reader, cook, but most of all… mother and grandmother. At the same time, Barbara also finished earning a teaching degree at the University of West Florida while raising her daughters and teaching special needs children in Pensacola. Once Barbara finished rearing her own children, she had more opportunities to spoil her grandchildren, and she loved it! But the most important times were in her role as mother and grandmother.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Lionel Paul Shepherd and Cecile Shepherd and her sister, Marie Warren (Ronnie).

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty years, Earl F. Roe; daughters, Lori Sue Roe Barnhart (David), Lisa Marie Roe Songe (Stephen), and Paula Ann Roe Turner (Murray); grandchildren, Connor Barnhart, Savannah Barnhart, Delaine Songe, Brayden Songe, and Murray Turner; and her sister's daughter, Susie Steel (Kevin); as well as a host of other beloved nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held 2:30pm Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church, with Dr. Michael Hoffman officiating. The family will greet guests following the Memorial Service in the Church Parrish Hall. Private family committal will be at Barrancas National Cemetery.
