Bertis Benton Jordan, M.D. of Gulf Breeze, FL passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 after a brief illness.
Bert, known to many as "BB" Jordan, was born in Industry, AL on November 14, 1925 to Edna Mae Shell Jordan and James S. Jordan, M.D.
Bert is predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Earl and Peg; sister, Willodean and his son, Richard (Ricky) Benton Jordan.
Bert is survived by the love of his life, Dorothy Huggins Jordan, to whom he was married for 65 years; his brother, Max Jordan; son, James Randall Jordan (Allison) and their children, Avery and Rachel; daughters, Jill Jordan Lee (Bill) and their sons, Jordan (Ashley) and Randy (Carly), Jennifer Jordan Fort (Johnny) and their daughters, Savannah and Lacey; Ricky's daughters, Emily Jordan Thacker, Cary Jordan, Melissa Jordan; and great grandchildren, Molly Thacker, Amelia Lee, Barrett and Sawyer Lee. He had so many relatives, nieces and nephews that were dear to his heart.
Dr. Jordan served his country in World War II as a Corpsman in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific. He went on to graduate from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Mobile Infirmary and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Bert served the Huntsville, AL community through his general medical practice as a family physician and surgeon. He also served as President of the Madison County, AL Medical Society.
Bert moved his family to Gulf Breeze, FL after many years of encouragement from his brother, Max, to join him on the bay. He established his family practice in Gulf Breeze in 1969. He and Dot immediately immersed themselves in the Gulf Breeze Community. Bert was a Charter Member, Past President and Paul Harris Fellow of the Gulf Breeze Rotary Club. He was a faithful and active member of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church and was proud to serve on the Staff Parrish Relation Committee when Herb Sadler was appointed to be the new pastor. He and Dot have supported the Pensacola Symphony and Opera, they hosted exchange students from Japan and Cambodian Royal Air Force Pilots over the years. Bert also served a term as Mayor of Gulf Breeze and was a team physician for Gulf Breeze High School. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, the Escambia County Medical Society and Baptist Internship Program. Dr. Jordan actively served as a physician for the Gulf Breeze Good Samaritan Clinic. Bert saw a great need for a hospital in Gulf Breeze. He was directly involved from the hospital conception as a medical staff leader and served on the Board of Directors from 1984-1997. Dr. Jordan was also President of the Medical Staff at Gulf Breeze Hospital in 1994. BB is considered to be the father of Gulf Breeze Hospital, with the main lobby being dedicated in his honor.
Bert had a wonderful staff at his medical practice that was always faithful, loving, loyal and great friends. Toni Dahigren Spatch, Alice Vinson, Cindy Powell Mills, Susie Mehaffey, Kelli Routh, Lisa Busby, Shawn Conner, Darlene Brown and others kept the practice running smoothly along the way.
A staunch Alabama fan who showed his team spirit with his wallet and with every step he took, sporting his University of Alabama walking cane. Bert loved to sail his ketch rig, the Sayonara, and was a member of the Pensacola Yacht Club.
The family is very thankful for the many patients and friends who shared their lives with Bert through the years.
Bert loved his family, loved Gulf Breeze, he loved his country, and he loved his Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ our Lord.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service, Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 2:00pm from Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church with Dr. Herb Sadler officiating. A Reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, Gulf Breeze Good Samaritan Clinic, Gulf Breeze Rotary Scholarship Fund, Gulf Breeze Hospital or Covenant Hospice.
