Following their graduation from The Ohio State University, Betty and Jim spent twenty-six years moving around the world with the US Navy while raising their family. During this time Betty volunteered her time at the various military hospitals as part of the Red Cross Hospital volunteers. With their final duty station and retirement in Pensacola, Betty volunteered at West Florida Hospital starting three weeks after it opened in 1975. Betty served in various nursing units for ten years where she helped families navigate the hospital and the emotions of having a loved one as a patient and then the hospital library where she served for another twenty years. She made many friends and was honored to serve there for such a length of time.
Betty was also active in the Pensacola Quilters Guild sharing with others her passion for this art that she had learned from her mother. Betty and Jim were heavily involved in putting on the annual quilt shows from 1995 to 2004.
Betty served her church, Trinity Presbyterian, as an office volunteer, Sunday School Teacher, and summer program staff member for many years. During that time, she worked at least one whole day each week, giving her time and talents as receptionist. She made sure the Trinity Staff had the support they needed to do the work of the church. Her willingness, dependability, and care were deeply appreciated by everyone on staff.
