IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Corrine
Morgan
December 12, 1942 – May 9, 2023
Betty Corrine Morgan passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. She was born December 12, 1942, at home in Bruce, Mississippi.
She graduated from Kingsbury high school in Memphis at age 17 and married Lonnie shortly afterwards. She and Lonnie settled in Memphis and began their family, before moving to Pensacola in 1978. She also attended business school during this time and later successfully juggled having a career with being a mother to two children. Betty enjoyed working in healthcare and finished her career working for Dr. Knefely.
Betty was a caretaker and faithfully cared for Lonnie while he suffered from kidney failure, learning to run an early dialysis machine at home. Lonnie received an experimental kidney transplant on February 11, 1973. He was one of very few to survive these early procedures, and Betty's love and care were undoubtedly a factor.
Despite these early challenges, Betty enjoyed life to the fullest. She believed you should eat ice cream every day and loved doting on her grandkids. Though she could barely dog paddle, she went rafting and tubing many times with her family, before eventually deciding she preferred watching from the bank and giving advice to passing tubers.
She and Lonnie enjoyed square dancing and travelling—going on several cruises with their friends. She enjoyed the Smoky Mountains and spent many summers in a RV by a creek in North Carolina, often with multiple grandkids. She loved her dogs, and she could be sighted often in recent years in a store with one in the basket of her shopping cart.
She survived ovarian and colon cancer receiving multiple rounds of chemo and two surgeries. She fought hard with a strong will to live, going into remission, and living much longer than the doctors thought likely.
She and Lonnie were longtime members of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Pensacola and the New Life Sunday School class.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Lonnie; her parents, Howard and Bernice Vaughn and her brother, Dean Vaughn.
She is survived by two children, Lonnie Morgan (Donna) and Shellie McCall (Bryan); sister, Teresa Vaughn; sister-in-law, Ann Vaughn and nine grandchildren, Nathan (Claire), Kelsie, Katherine, Nicholas, Delaney, Nolan, Nicole, Noah, and Nyles.
A visitation will take place on Friday, May 12, 2023 from 1:00 pm until the funeral service begins at 2:00 pm at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.
