Betty Russell Thompson, 86, a resident of Pensacola Beach passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Betty was born on September 22, 1928 in Westville, FL and graduated from Holmes County High School in Bonifay, FL. She graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in 1948 and started working at Sacred Heart Hospital in 1950. Betty served as the Director of Nursing at Sacred Heart and also served as President of the Florida Nursing Association for 2 years. After leaving Sacred Heart, she began a career at Monsanto in 1970. Betty and her family were one of eleven founding families of Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church on Pensacola Beach. She was preceded in death by her father, Jay Russell; mother, Clara Braxton Russell; brothers, Jack (Ann), Dan (Betty Jo) and Keith (Margaret); her husband, Ron Thompson and a son, Stephen Thompson. She is survived by her sister, Billie Mason (Perry); brothers, Robert (Joyce), Neal (Carolyn) and John (Darlene); her son, Douglas (Penny) Thompson and 3 grandchildren along with 2 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 9am Monday, October 20, 2014 at Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church (Pensacola Beach) with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10am with Msgr. Luke Hunt, celebrant. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park. The family and friends are invited to return to the church after burial for a reception. Pallbearers will be Justin Gittings, Lee Hale, Bobby Hale, Jay Thompson, Dennis Gossman and Tim Gossman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, Joyce Goldenberg Inpatient Residence, 10075 Hillview Road, Pensacola, FL 32514. Special thanks to the nurses on 2E and 2W floors, the Palliative Care unit and social workers at Sacred Heart Hospital, and also the nurses at Covenant Hospice.
