IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bob
Moran
February 9, 1931 – August 22, 2025
Robert William "Bob" Moran, 94, died peacefully at home in Pensacola, FL, on August 22, 2025. Born in Chicago, IL, on February 9, 1931, he was the son of Robert James Moran and Dorothy Lyons Moran.
Because of the Great Depression, Bob spent his infancy in southern Illinois with his mother's family until his dad was able to find work back in the Chicago area. When he was two years old Bob and his parents moved to the east side of Chicago. The family, along with his baby sister Patricia, eventually moved to the South Side of Chicago where Bob was able to spend his late childhood and teen years enjoying the many benefits of Trumball Park. There he honed his swimming skills enabling him to lifeguard at Chicago area beaches as a young adult. After graduating from Bowen High School, Bob enlisted in the Navy. Around the time of his enlistment, the family moved to Tinley Park, Illinois.
Bob proudly served aboard the USS Norris DDE-859 during the Korean Conflict, from September 1950-July 1954. Upon discharge he returned home to Tinley Park and attended Thornton Junior College. He then trained as a sheet metal mechanic and draftsman and became a member of Sheet Metal Workers' Union Local 73, continuing in this career, oftentimes as a job foreman, until his retirement. Highlights of his career included working on the First National Bank and the John Hancock buildings in Chicago and installing equipment in various McDonald's restaurants throughout the U.S.
Bob and Mary married in 1957 and lived in Blue Island until after the birth of Patricia Anne when they moved to Tinley Park and joined the parish of St. George. After renting at two locations, they were able to purchase a house at 16755 Harlem Avenue where they raised their 5 children. For a time, Bob's sister Patricia, her husband Eddie, and their 5 children lived next door. Oh, the fun they had! In their 50s, both Mary and Bob became runners and occasionally participated and medaled in triathlons. Bob even qualified for an Ironman competition.
In retirement in Pensacola, FL, Bob and Mary were lucky to live near some of their children who had moved to Pensacola to pursue their careers. Bob volunteered at the YMCA as a swimming instructor and at the National Naval Aviation Museum located on the Pensacola Naval Station. He was also active in planning and attending the reunions for the U.S.S. Norris.
His children have often thought of Bob as a Renaissance man. Not only did he teach them to ride bikes, play basketball and baseball, ice skate and water ski, he also instilled in them a love for learning. He conducted science experiments involving jars of pond water, taught the children to play chess, read Shakespeare and his favorite poets to them, and shared his love of classical music, especially opera. Although he had no formal training, he could play any instrument by ear and taught himself to play the banjo, bagpipes, and harmonica, often serenading the grandchildren. His children considered him their hero, supportive, calm and gifted with a terrific sense of humor.
During Covid Bob and Mary lived with Kathleen and were cared for by Patty, her family, and Kathleen. As Bob's health deteriorated over the last few years, he always awakened with a smile ready to greet the new day. Special thanks go out to the other caregivers in his life, Judy, Yolanda, Mya, Qua'shun, and Monica, and to all the health care professionals responsible for his medical well-being.
Along with his late parents, Bob is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Poropat Moran and his son Robert James Moran.
He is survived by his daughters, Daryl Lindstrom (Richard), Patty Janicek (Frank), Mary Rayson (Thomas), and Kathleen Moran; his sister, Patricia Siemsen and brother-in-law Edward Siemsen; grandchildren Dawn Lindstrom Calciano (Graham), Jennifer Lindstrom, Kathryn Lindstrom Clark (Rob), Danielle Lindstrom Blaser (Joseph), Andrew Janicek, Viktor Janicek, Colin Rayson (Sabine), Billy Rayson, Emily Moran, Hannah Moran, Nora Moran, and Robert Moran; great-grandchildren, Siena Calciano, Kadin Calciano, Hannah Clark, Adam Clark, Kaylee Clark, Allie Clark, Jocelyn Blaser, Callie Blaser; as well as beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
