IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bryant
Liggett
April 16, 1929 – September 30, 2022
Henry "Bryant" Liggett, age 93, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Bryant was born on April 16, 1929 to Alice Ruth Bryant and Herschel Baxter Liggett in Nashville, TN. He spent his childhood working on the Liggett Tobacco Farm, building model airplanes, becoming a distinguished pianist, and perfecting his golf swing. He graduated in 1947 from Cohn High School, and between high school and college, Bryant won the Tennessee state golf championship and earned both academic and athletic scholarships to Vanderbilt University. Bryant continued to excel at golf, and as captain of the Vanderbilt golf team, led them to many championships, and was inducted into the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame in 2011. He was a proud member of Sigma Nu fraternity, and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in History and Economics.
After graduation, Bryant was commissioned as an officer into the US Air Force during the Korean War, and proudly created all the Standard Operating Procedures for maintenance for Boeing's B-47 Stratojet. After his tenure with the Air Force, Bryant settled in Pensacola, FL where he put down roots in what he called "the most beautiful city in the world." Upon returning to civilian life, his career led him to become a General Contractor, and his commercial and residential work helped curate the local landscape.
Bryant's impact on this city and its people is immeasurable. Throughout his lifetime, Bryant served his community in a multitude of ways; his proudest being as Mayor of the City of Pensacola, where he championed the foundation of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Bryant also served on Pensacola's City Council, as President of Pensacola Country Club, United Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Florida, Gulf Coast Crime Stoppers, and served as a board member for a myriad of other local non profits. He was an active member of Fiesta Pensacola, Rebellaires, Antique Automobile Club of America, and many more. In the rare moments when Bryant wasn't servicing others, he devoted his time to being the best husband and father in the world, playing his favorite Gershwin pieces on the piano, golfing with his Wednesday golf crew, restoring antique cars, and sipping G&Ts on the front porch of his North Hill home. Bryant led a fiercely loyal and rich life - rich in happiness, rich in community, and above all else, rich in love.
Bryant is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Barbara Liggett Maynor, and his wife, Kate Lytle Liggett.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Dwyer Liggett; his children, Stephen Liggett (Julie), Jane Dickerson (William), Elizabeth Klahorst (Shad), Bryant Cobb (Samuel), Alexander Liggett, Hunter Liggett, Katie Roberts (John) and John Wilson (Raquel); cousin, Mary Griffith; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren and countless others who lovingly referred to him as "Papa Lig."
