Obituary

Carol U. Young passed away peacefully on Saturday, 19 July 2014. Born in Mt. Shasta, CA, she attended Fresno State College, taught high school in Glendora, then entered the Peace Corps in 1962, serving in Santiago, Chile. In 1964 she began work at the Student YWCA at Stanford University, where she met her future husband, Peter Young, marrying the following year. They both worked several summers at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, then moved to Galesburg, IL in 1967 where Pete began his career as a theatre professor. In 1974 they came to Pensacola for Pete to teach at UWF. Here Carol renewed her own teaching career, now at the elementary level, with ten years at Creative Learning Center. Later, she taught ESOL classes for PJC's adult education program, and then was invited to teach future ESOL teachers in the College of Education at UWF, from which she retired in 1999. Avid travelers, the Youngs traveled often within the US as well as making many home exchanges with families in Europe. Carol and Pete also lived in London during Pete's four sabbatical leaves. Carol loved the arts and with Pete they were frequent theatre and concert go'ers and visitors to museums and art galleries. She took up painting in watercolor and acrylics in the 90s, becoming a member of the Art Study Club and exhibiting at both Blue Morning and Quayside Galleries as well as at several independent art shows in Pensacola. Carol was also an active member of the choir at Pensacola's First United Methodist Church. Carol was an avid activist in community and environmental issues such as the locally successful campaign to save 372 acres of beach just east of Portofino from development, and she was a long-time donor to the Environmental Defense Fund. She also took an active role in various political campaigns and causes. Carol is survived by her husband, Pete; brother, Gary; and son, Cohn. A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Pensacola on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, deductible memorial gifts may be made to the Environmental Defense Fund, 1875 Connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20009 or Covenant Hospice of Pensacola, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.
