IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carolyn "Cappy"
Armitage Paddock Knefely
March 3, 1949 – March 10, 2018
A beautiful, intelligent, loving, and sharing Cappy died at peace on Saturday, March 10, 2018, following a lengthy illness. At her bedside were her husband of 48 years, Dr. George (Bud) Knefely; her son, Mac Knefely (Beth Fulton) of Pensacola, and her daughter, Alison S. Sides (Rob) of Knoxville, TN. Her "angel sister Susie" was caring for Cappy's beloved grandchildren, Charlie and Haley Sides.
Born a "Navy junior" on March 3, 1949 in Seattle, WA to the late RADM, USN, Richard A. Paddock and Shirley S. Paddock, she traveled widely, but considered Newport, RI a second home. It was there Cappy graduated from Rogers High School in 1967 and nurtured her lifelong passion for books working at The Redwood Library.
Briefly attending Colorado College, Cappy ran off to Hawaii where she met and married Bud in a small Army chapel. After attending The University of Hawaii, then The University of Alabama, Huntsville, she graduated from The University of West Florida with a BA in political science in 1974. Two children later, and with the inspiration of Dr. Jane Dysart, Cap completed her MA in history in 1988. She went on to become a history instructor at Pensacola Junior College; and, subsequently, at The University of West Florida.
Cappy was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, The Historical Society, The National Association of Scholars, Escambia County Medical Alliance, Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre Board, Panhandle Tiger Bay, and The Pensacola Bay Area Impact 100. She enjoyed playing tennis and, more recently, spending time on her computer. She had remained active in The UWF History Dept. being a judge for The History Faculty Award for Excellence in Writing which was named in her honor on her retirement.
She was so very fortunate to have had recent visits from her brothers, Dr. Bradley Paddock (Amy Hall) of Gloversville, NY and David Paddock (Susan) of Virginia Beach, VA. Cap also leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Susan Stumpf (Capt. Robert, USN (Ret.)) of Pensacola, Aunt Georgia and Uncle Clayt Dudley of Woodbury, CT, and Aunt Patty Wilson (the late Walter) of Tubac, AZ, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Cappy loved her children and grandchildren (who called her "CC"). She remained close to her fellow teachers and many of her former students. She always said, "You'll remember me as a constant reader.", and she was! She enjoyed sharing with friends and relatives. She liked watching the birds, the bayou, and the rose garden I created for her.
Cappy's Memorial Service by The Rev. Michael Hoffman is scheduled at 3:30pm on Friday, April 13, 2018 at Christ Church Parish of Pensacola, FL. Visitation with the family will follow. She will rest in peace at Barrancas National Cemetery.
We'd like to thank the caring staff at Baptist Hospital and Covenant Care Hospice at Sacred Heart Hospital. Also, we'll be forever thankful for Cappy's sister, Susie who was with her almost daily for months; and for Cap's close friends, Gabi Grosse, Stephanie Moussalli Kurtz, and Mary Reed whose families became our own. Aunt Georgia is also on that list of angels.
Donations in Carolyn's memory may be made to The UWF History Faculty Award for Excellence in Writing (11000 University Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32514) or to Christ Church Parish (P.O. Box 12683, Pensacola, FL 32591).
