Obituary

On October 6, 2009, one of the worlds unheralded great men joined the ranks of the rewarded. Francis L. Looney was an unprecedented success in his 30-year naval career that began before our country was drawn into war in 1941. His service hallmark, in war and in peace, as a crewman and in his three afloat commands, was complete fidelity both to the mission at hand and to the sailors in his charge. Through his rapid advancement through 12 Navy ranks, he never forgot what it meant to be a Seaman Deuce. He was, above all, a shining exemplar to his family of what it was to be a good man, husband, father, and son. Decisive and fair, Frank Looney taught his children honesty and a sense of respect for our fellow man. He disciplined while teaching the qualities of mercy and forgiveness and he provided lessons in integrity and fairness. He was the most gentle and powerful, the most humble and honest man we ever knew. His wife of 63 years and six children remember his clarity and constancy rooted in staunch principles. His 13 grandchildren will forever remember the loving arms within which Pappap enfolded them each time they came to visit. Nothing was ever insurmountable to him. Among those whose lives he touched, he is a legend, a giant from whom we all draw strength, even in his death. Visitation will be held 5-7pm Monday, October 12, 2009 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00am Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at St. Pauls Catholic Church with Fr. Doug Halsema celebrant. Committal of remains will follow at 12:30pm at Barrancas National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Flowers are welcome, as are donations to St. Pauls Catholic Church, Building Fund, 1700 Conway Dr., Pensacola, FL 32503. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
