CDR Dale Howard Williams, USN, (ret), 98, of Pensacola, FL died Sunday, June 9, 2024.
He was born on March 24, 1926, in Littleton, WV to Cleopatra (Gorby) and John Edward Williams. CDR Dale Howard Williams enlisted in the US Navy in May 1944 after graduating from high school in Littleton, WV. He completed basic training at NTC, Great Lakes, IL in July 1944, and was assigned to the South Pacific theatre of operations from September 1944 to September 1946. He then received orders to NAOTS Chincoteague, VA as a Boat Coxswain from April 1946 to December 1948. In January 1948, he received orders to the USS Cabot (CVL-28) for flight deck operations until May 1950. He then received orders to NYG Atlantic, Bayonne, NJ in a supervisory function.
In May 1952, he reported aboard the USS Midway (CVA-41) and worked in the V-3-G and V-4 division as leading petty officer. In May 1954, he detached from the Midway and reported to VR-1 NAS Patuxent River, MD as Terminal Cargo Chief. In October 1956, he reported aboard the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) as Flight Deck Chief and V-1 Division Leading Chief Petty Officer (CPO). In May 1957, Warrant Officer Williams reported aboard the USS Midway (CVA-41) as Assistant V-1 Division Officer. During his tour of duty, Warrant Offer Williams applied for the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program. After selection to the program, he attended Officer Candidate School at NAS Pensacola, FL where he received a commission as an Ensign (O-1).
In December 1958, Ensign Williams received orders to the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Kwajalein, Marshall Islands as the V-4 Division and Aviation Fuels Officer. He detached from Kwajalein in August 1960 and reported aboard the USS Kearsarge (CVS-33) as Aviation Fuels Officer until December 1962. LTJG Williams then reported aboard NAAS Saufley Field, Pensacola, FL as the Crash and Rescue Division Officer and Security Department Head. In November 1965, LT Williams detached from Saufley Field and reported to McMurdo Station, Antarctica (Operation Deep Freeze) as Antarctic Support Fuels Officer.
LCDR Williams then detached and reported to COMFAIRALAMEDA staff in March 1968 as the Services and Schedules Officer. In January 1970, LCDR Williams reported aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) as Aviation Fuels and V-4 Division Officer. CDR Williams detached from CVN-65 in January 1973 and reported to NAS Alameda, CA as Assistant Air Operations Officer. On June 30, 1974, he retired from the US Navy after 30 years of service. His daughter stationed at NAS Alameda, served as a side boy during his retirement ceremony.
In his 30 years of Naval service, he held 13 rates/ranks.
CDR Williams was married to Lois Fleming (now deceased) and has two Children, Amy (Williams) Bishop and Barry Williams, his granddaughter, Shannon M. Williams.
He was a member of the Old Antarctic Explorers group.
Visitation to be held from 9:00 to 9:30 am on Friday, June 14, 2024, with departure at 9:30 am for a 10:00 am Graveside Service at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola.
