Obituary

Charles Hampton Carlan, P.E., P.L.S., 85, Past President & Founder Hatch Mott MacDonald of Florida & Alabama-Retired, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023.

Charles was born on July 21, 1937, in DeFuniak Springs, FL. He graduated from Walton High School and entered Auburn University in 1955. In 1959, after playing on the Auburn baseball team for four years, he signed a professional baseball contract with the Milwaukee Braves organization, playing in the organization until 1961. He received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Auburn University in 1960.

A registered Engineer in Florida and Alabama, he was also a Licensed Surveyor in Florida and has more than 40 years of professional engineering and surveying experience. Prior to association with the firm, his professional history includes tenures as the youngest Staff Director of the State of Florida Senate Transportation Committee, Maintenance Engineer of the Florida Department of Transportation, Streets Superintendent and City Engineer for the City of Pensacola.

His career started with a small architectural/engineering firm in Tallahassee called Barrett, Daffin & Figg that later became Barrett Daffin and Carlan. The firm became Carlan Consulting LLC when he acquired the firm at the death of his two long time partners. The firm would later merge with one of the largest engineering firms in the northeast and would become CarlanKillam Consulting Group. While serving as President of CarlanKillam Consulting Group, the firm grew to one of the largest engineering/architectural firms headquartered in Northwest Florida. Opening with three employees in 1956 the firm grew 120+ employees in the Northwest Florida area. As a member of the Killam Group of Companies, the firm was acquired by a joint venture of a Canadian and United Kingdom firm in 2001. The newly formed company, Hatch Mott MacDonald, employed more than 23,000 internationally and over 400 in the Southeast Division. The current firm is now named HatchMott.

Charles has always been active in civic and philanthropic endeavors. An active member for the betterment of the Engineering Profession, he has been President of the Florida Engineering Society (FES), Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) and the Professional Surveyors of Florida. He received one of the highest awards from Auburn University the Governor A.W. Gilchrist Award for his many years of service to the engineering profession. He was presented by the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers for Outstanding Service to the Engineering Profession and Community by an Engineer of Florida. Received the Auburn University's Engineering Achievement Award. Served as the first Chairman of the Engineering Advisory Council for University of West Florida. He is one of a select few who has been inducted as a Fellow into ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) a national organization recognizing his many contributions to the field of Engineering, He was also inducted as a Fellow in the Florida Engineering Society for his many years of service to the association.

Charles was forever grateful and had a deep love for the many employees who worked beside him for many years. His love of family, friends, and Auburn football was contagious. Everyone knew and loved his four-legged Champ who was by his side continuously.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Loy and Eleanor Carlan; sister, Eleanor Jean Bryant; brother, Cecil Carlan; and his two beloved 4 legged sons, Champ Carlan 1 and 2.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Carol Harper Carlan; two sons, David Carlan (Beverly) and Larry Carlan (Laura Orr); grandchildren, Wesley Carlan, Morgan Carlan Fain (Sam), Brooke Ellen Carlan, and Courtney Carlan Alsobrook (Evan); Daughter-in-law, Tracey Carlan; great grandson, Noah David Fain; as well as his sisters, Carol Otts and Barbara Bass.

A celebration of Charles's life will be held 2:00pm Friday, March 10, 2023, at First United Methodist Church, 6 E. Wright St., Pensacola, with Dr. Henry Roberts officiating.
