Charles Ray Yarbrough passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2012. He was an avid runner, biker and swimmer, devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather. A proud product of Pensacola, FL, Ray was close to family and friends. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Cecil and Emma; brothers, Brinson and Horace. He is survived by his wife, Gayle; daughters, Stacy and Kim; sons, Ray, Jr., Greg, and Gary; grandchildren, Brandon, Devin, Tony, Jason, and Daniel. As one of 3 children, he learned the importance of hard work and helping others. He exhibited a strong work ethic, and was goal focused, as was evidence by his many accomplishments. Ray was much loved by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. He joined the First United Methodist Church in 1938 and became one of the longest standing members of the church. He attended P.K. Young Elementary, A.B. Clubbs Middle School, and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1945. He lettered in football in High School for 3 years. After high school, Ray served in the Merchant Marines for 9 months. He joined the Army in 1946 and served in Korea with the 6th infantry division until 1948. He attended the University of Florida in 1948 and graduated in 1952 from the School of Architecture with a degree in Building Construction. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He received an ROTC Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corp of Engineers and served on active duty in Germany until the end of the Korean War. He joined the Army Reserves in 1955 and served as commanding officer of the 371st engineers. He later became as the commanding officer of the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade. During this time, he also served as chairman of the Nation Civil Affairs Convention, which brought in military personnel from all over the United States. He retired as a Colonel in 1981. Ray was employed by Gulf Power Company from 1952 until 1989. He retired as the Director of Appliance Sales and Service. He was a Board Member of the Home Builders Association and served as Parade of Homes Chairman. He served on the Board of Directors of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts of American, Jaycees Board of Directors, worked for many years with the United Fund, was past member of Pensacola Advertising and Sales Executive Club, and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order Alumni. Ray is a member of Pensacola Yacht Club and served as Vice Commodore and on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Mayoki Indians, Saints and Sinners, and the Hidalgos. Ray was very active in the Pensacola Runners Association. He served as Vice President, Treasurer, Board Member, Membership Chair, and Race Director of the Fiesta Run for many years. He was a member of, and participated in; Captain Fun Runners, McGuire's Runners, Seville Quarter Milers, Blue Hare Hashers, the Red Dress Run, the Crescent City Classic Run, and the Gulf Coast Triathlon Club. He was awarded the Lou Gregory Spirit Award for demonstrating leadership and enthusiasm. He also received the Jim Harrington Award. The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until the Funeral Service at 2:00pm Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Pensacola with Dr. Wesley Wachob and Rev. Geoffrey Lentz officiating. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park with military honors. Active Pallbearers will be Randy Maygarden, Jerry Smith, Dennis Funchess, Jim McElwee, Bob Kelly, Gary Bunde and Larry Gilgun. Honorary Pallbearers are the Lipscomb Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 6 E.
