IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Carroll
Sherrill
April 6, 1938 – October 28, 2021
Charles Carroll "Charlie" Sherrill, born April 6, 1938, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 28, 2021.
Charlie was born to Frontis W. Sherrill and Mary J. Sherrill in Pensacola. Charlie attended Pensacola High School, Washington and Lee University where he was a member of the SAE fraternity, and the University of Florida College of Law. While at W&L, he was introduced to Mary Baldwin College freshman, Mimi McKinnon, by his sister Alice Sherrill (Weller), who was Mimi's dear friend. Charlie and Mimi soon began their lives together through marriage, service in Oklahoma with the U.S. Army, law school at the University of Florida, and raising four lively sons.
When the young family returned to Pensacola, Charlie began his law practice where he helped countless families and small businesses spanning nearly five decades. Through the years, Charlie was recognized for his membership and leadership in the Pensacola Rotary Club where he served as President and was a Paul Harris Fellow; the Scottish Rite where he earned the 33 rd degree and served as chair of the anonymous donor Almoner's Fund; and above all , as the skipper of a series of sailboats named Chuckles . He retired to full time enjoyment of sailing, crabbing, turkey hunting, boating aboard the Miss Minnie , family gatherings on the porch, and life as a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. He remains famous for crafting high quality sail bags and duffels, using scrap sail material often found while dumpster diving – with permission – at Schurr Sails. He gifted, but never once sold, thousands of "Charlie bags", remaining true to his tagline: "We don't make what Schurr sells, and we sure don't sell what we make".
Charlie Sherrill was honest, hard-working and kind. He was a faithful Christian, and exemplified generosity, patience and humility. He sought harmony and accord in all relationships. He was a realist with a keen insight into the future; a devoted husband, a great example of how to be a father, provider, and a true gentleman of the highest integrity.
Charlie and Mimi shared a joyful life of love over their 60 years of marriage. They travelled extensively in their younger years, and later cruised the Gulf, bays and bayous of Northwest Florida together over many decades. Charlie was the skipper and Mimi was the very best first mate and a wonderful cook in the galley. They shared many sunsets and banquet nights aboard the Chuckles with cherished friends at picturesque harbors.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Frontis and Mamie; his beloved wife, Mimi; and his two brothers, Bill and Dick.
He is survived by his four sons, Charles, Jr. (Sue-Sue), Philip, Fred (Heidi), and Richard (Lisee); 11 grandchildren, Charlie III (Mallory), Amelia, Hugh, Louise, Dobbin, Walker, Brooks, Mimi, Gordon, Luke and Mac; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Kate, Will and Jane; devoted sister, Alice; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4:30pm to 6:00pm on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
