Obituary

Charles Wightman Hendershott, 89, of Gulf Breeze, FL, former resident of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, New Orleans, LA, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Pensacola, FL. and Kennebunk, ME, passed away October 27, 2014 in Grand Rapids, Ml. The son of Robert 1. Hendershott, Jr. of Hastings, Ml and Verna Clemens Hendershott, of Constantine, MI, he was born in on March 31, 1925 in Montreal. Charles was married to Jacquelynn McCready Vizzini on May 12, 1955 in New Orleans, LA. He attended Mc Gill University in Montreal and graduated from Columbia University in New York with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and an M.B.A. in Production Management. Charles spent his 37 year career with American Cyanamid Co. and CYRO Industries working in different divisions in Canada and the United States. He was Director of Manufacturing and Engineering for GYRO Industries in Woodcliff Lake, NJ and retired in 1989 as Manager of CYRO Industries in Sanford, ME. During his working career, Charles was active in civic and professional organizations serving as the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Niagara Falls, Ontario and in Sanford, Maine, was a member of the Board of Directors for the State of Maine Chamber of Commerce and was the Chair of the Private Industry Council of Maine for 11 years. He also served as President of the United Way in Niagara Falls, ONT and Sanford, ME. He was a member of the Professional Engineers Association of Ontario and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pensacola, Sigma Chi Fraternity and the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1943 and was honorably discharged in October 1946. He served in the 82111 Airborne, 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment and participated in the 0-Day Invasion in Normandy, Operation Market Garden in Holland, The Battle of the Bulge and The Battle of the Rhine and was a member of the Army of Occupation in Berlin. He received two Bronze Stars and numerous medals for each campaign in which he fought. He was predeceased by his father, Robert I. Hendershott, Jr. of Hastings, MI and Montreal West, Quebec, his mother, Verna (Clemens) Hendershott of Constantine, Ml and Montreal West, Quebec, brothers Robert I. Hendershott Ill of Galveston, TX and Frederick William Hendershott of Princeton, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Jacquelynn M. Hendershott of Gulf Breeze, FL, daughters, Lindsey G. (James) Windrow of Pensacola, FL and Anne Clemens Hendershott of Palenville, NY, granddaughters, Ashley Windrow and Brittany Windrow of Pensacola, FL, sister, Evelyn Hendershott of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and nieces and nephews in Canada and the U. S. A Memorial Service officiated by Reverend Frank Beall will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL. Visitation will begin at Noon followed by the service at 1:00 p. m. Interment will take place at a later date in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola. If friends desire, Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pensacola, or a charity of one's choice.
