Charles "Charley" Smith, age 88, of Pensacola, went home to join his heavenly Father on Sunday, October 9, 2022. Charles was born on December 10, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Albert and Blanche Binder Smith.
Charley was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was of the Christian faith and proudly served his county in the US Air Force during the Korean War. His family moved to Washington D.C. when he was very young. He dropped out of high school in the tenth grade and began working for the railroad. Reminiscing later in life, he said it was the best job he ever had. In 1953, Charley joined the US Air Force during the Korean War. Once he fulfilled his duties in the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1957 and met and married the love of his life in Quebec, Canada. He enjoyed practicing Karate in his younger years, then later moved on to organic gardening and volunteering with the local rescue squad. Eventually, Charley earned not one but two college degree's while working as an Electronics Engineer for the FAA. After retiring at 55 years of age, he devoted his time and energy to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ at a local soup kitchen and then at several prisons in the area. His life was an inspiration, and his legacy of love will live on. He truly was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Cecile M. Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory include, his son, Will Smith, of Oklahoma City, OK; a daughter, Lori Richards, of Pensacola, FL; eight grandchildren, Morgan Smith, of Oklahoma City, OK, Baily Smith, Orlando, FL, Brady Smith, of Oklahoma City, Reagan Smith, of Oklahoma City, Parker Smith, of Oklahoma City, Riley Smith, of Oklahoma City, Cruz Smith, of Oklahoma City, and Emitt Smith, of Oklahoma City.
A graveside service will be held to honor Charles Smith's life on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at Barrancas National Cemetery, with Pastor Randy Hamil and Mr. Charles Givens, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the US Air Force. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 10:15 A.M. to go to the cemetery in police procession.
