IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charlotte Jayne
Akers Smith Mackey
April 25, 1924 – May 30, 2024
Charlotte Jayne Akers Smith Mackey, beloved wife of the late Methodist minister Jesse Robert Mackey died peacefully on May 30, 2024, in Pensacola, FL. She was 100 years old.
Jayne was born April 25, 1924, in Mattoon, IL to Dewey Akers and Ruth Akers (nee Hillard). She spent her childhood in Downer's Grove, IL. Upon graduation from high school (at the age of 16, she attended Stephens College in Missouri and, after receiving her AA, transferred to the University of Mexico in Mexico City.
Following college, Jayne moved to Mount Dora, FL to be with her parents. One Sunday the pastor at her church introduced her to a visiting pastor and one of his closest friends - a fellow Methodist minister from Jacksonville. Their courtship was decidedly whirlwind; they were married 6 months later in July 1944. Their daughter Melissa was born two years afterwards.
In 1948 Robert Mackey received an appointment to Asbury Methodist Church in Salisbury, MD. It was common in those days for ministers to stay about 7 years with a congregation before being transferred. For the Mackeys it proved to be different. Together, they spent more than 2 decades supervising the building of a new church; participating in the daily life of the community and developing lasting friendships. During that time Jayne helped establish the first church- based thrift store and brought a chapter of the League of Women Voters to the Eastern Shore - all while actively pursuing volunteer work, charitable activities and civic enterprises.
There are not enough words to describe Jayne. She was loyal, elegant, adventurous, inquisitive, generous of spirit, and a loving wife, mother and friend. She and her husband were true partners and equally faithful in their service to God and the Methodist Church.
Jayne is preceded in death by her husband and parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins both in Florida and Illinois.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Mackey Chapel at First United Methodist Church, 6 East Wright Street. Pensacola, FL.
The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice - Sara and Ronda -- her home health provider Jazmin, and her friend Leslie who all lovingly helped her in these last years. She will be greatly missed.
