Obituary

Charletta "Charly" Benchley Gray Hubbard, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 29, 2020 in Pensacola surrounded by family.

Charly was born on July 16, 1927 in Utica, NY, to Latham Gray, Sr. and Margaret Dickinson.

She spent her early years in upstate New York and summers in Massachusetts with close relatives. She attended high school at Fairfax Hall, a boarding school in Virginia. Charly graduated early from the University of Michigan in 1947 and moved to New York City where she worked at B. Altman's Department Store. In the fall of 1948, she met her lifelong love Samuel John Hubbard, Sr. while he was a cadet at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. They were married in the Cadet Chapel upon Sam's graduation in June of 1952.

Charly was a homemaker, full-time kindergarten teacher as well as an active Army wife for Dad's military career which ended after 28 years of service, while serving in the Washington, D.C. area. She was also a longtime volunteer in several organizations including the Red Cross and later at the Gulf Breeze Hospital when she and her husband retired to the Pensacola/Gulf Breeze area in 1990. She was also a member of PEO and Impact 500, both philanthropic organizations. Charly was an avid bridge player most of her adult life and enjoyed the social connections she and Sam made while playing this game. In retirement Charly and Sam enjoyed spending time traveling and socializing with friends and family. She was a gracious lady, matriarch, and life force for those that knew her. Charly leaves behind a beloved family that will miss her dearly.

Charly is survived by her four children, Sam Hubbard, Jr. (Patsy), Anne Montgomery (Chris), Gail Carlson (John), and Steven Hubbard; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held in 2021. At a later date she will join her husband who is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
