Obituary

Claire French Wall Seith, age 90, passed away in the Hospice wing of West Florida Hospital on Friday, August 16, 2013. Claire was the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Roscoe French of Samson, AL where she was born on October 25, 1922. Her early years were spent in Samson. After earning a Bachelor's Degree from Huntingdon College, Claire served with the US Army Intelligence Service in Miami, FL. Following WWII, Claire joined the staff of the American Red Cross and traveled extensively doing social work. She later earned a Master's Degree from Auburn University. In 1948, Claire married Paul Wall and they were stationed in Vienna, Austria where in 1950 Claire gave birth to their first child Sheila Anne Wall. After their return to the States in 1952, Mr. Wall retired from the US Army and they established residence in Tuscaloosa. In 1956, Claire gave birth to their second child, son Gregory Keith Wall. Claire and her husband owned and operated a drug store in downtown Tuscaloosa until her husband's sudden death in 1960. In 1962, Claire joined the staff of the University of Alabama and served as the Assistant Dean of Women until 1966 when she became Dean of Students at Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS. In 1968, she married USAF Colonel William F.G. Seith and shortly after they were stationed in Manila, ROP where Col. Seith was the Deputy Commander of the USMAAG. During their stay in Manila, Claire enjoyed being an active volunteer with the US Embassy staff. After Col. Seith's retirement, they established residence in Pensacola on June 1, 1972. Both Claire and her husband participated in real estate interests and were active at Christ Episcopal Church. Claire enjoyed serving in a number of women's clubs including the Christ Church Altar Guild and the Pensacola Garden Club. Claire and her husband were golf enthusiasts and enjoyed activities at Scenic Hills and Pensacola Country Club. Mrs. Seith was predeceased by her first husband Paul Wall; her daughter Sheila Anne Wall of Williamsburg, VA; her brother James French of Dothan, AL; and sisters Grover Nell French Beckham of Shalimar, FL and Jacqueline French Lee of Pell City, AL. She is survived by her husband, Col. William F. G. Seith (Ret); son Gregory Keith Wall of Sarasota, FL; stepson William F. G. Seith, Jr. MD and his wife Judy of Biloxi, MS. Other survivors include her brother John French, PhD of Auburn, AL; sisters Joyce French (James) Wise of Samson, AL and Suzanne French (Edward) Burdeshaw of Columbus, GA; her grand-daughters Jennifer (Todd) Souto of Glencoe, IL and Susannah (Ivan) Via of Fishersville, VA and great grand-children William George Souto and Anna Kathryn Via. Funeral Services will be 1:00pm on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504 or to the charity of your choice.
