Obituary

In the early morning of Sunday, September 15, 2024, Cloy Faye McCurley Brewer unexpectedly passed away at the age of 83, as she slept.

Cloy Faye was born in Crestview, FL on September 3, 1941, to Felton Webb and Dethalene Haskell McCurley.

Faye, as she was so affectionately known to all, was a loving caregiver for her entire life. At the early age of 12, she lost her mother suddenly, who left behind a newborn infant and five children. As a young teenager, she would put her own childhood behind to help her dad raise the four younger brothers, not only acting as a big sister, but as the only mother figure they would have as they grew up.

Faye met and married her husband, George Cleveland Brewer, at the young age of 15. They were happily married for nearly 68 years at the time of her death. She was a devoted wife to George her entire adult life, as she became his caregiver for these past few years.

Faye was also a loving mother to her three children, for whom she made selfless sacrifice to ensure that her children were loved and well cared for. She shared her admiration for music and song with all three of her children. She was also a devoted and loving grandmother to six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She instilled Christian values in her children and grandchildren and exemplified her deep faith to all who knew her.

In 1979, Faye once again made sacrifices to ensure that her father was well cared for following a very serious automobile accident, which left him unable to care for his own needs. She continued to care for him for several years thereafter until his death. She was also a breast cancer survivor, not once but twice. Even through her own health challenges, she continued to care for her loved ones.

Faye was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church for 61 years. As a devout Christian, she was a godly example to many young people, teaching Sunday School, participating in youth activities, and praising God through song in the church choir for several years. It was an extremely rare Sunday or Wednesday for her not to be seen in church.

Although she did not have a formal education, she was a very intelligent woman.

As a life-long homemaker, her home was always open to all, and she enjoyed spending time around the dinner table, sharing fellowship with family and friends. She was a devoted daughter, loving wife, and caring sister, mother and grandmother, with a deep-rooted Christian faith and sacrificial heart. We can all take solace knowing that she will spend eternity in heaven, watching over us all.

Faye is preceded in death by her parents, Felton Webb and Dethalene Haskell McCurley; her sister, Mary Francis Morrical; her brothers, Samuel Edward McCurley and William Richard McCurley, along with two infant siblings, Charles and Shirley Ann McCurley; and her granddaughter, Kathryn Dethlene Brewer.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, George Cleveland Brewer of Pensacola, FL; her son, George Michael Brewer (Virginia) of University Place, WA; two daughters, Sharon Faye Mandel (Robert Keating) of Pensacola, FL, and Kathryn Renee Cox (Greg) of Cantonment, FL; two brothers, Michael Dean McCurley (Mary) of  Shiloh, IL and Larry Haskell McCurley (Ronda) of Bossier City, LA; five grandchildren, Julia Jeanette Bojanowski, Katelyn Renee Lisenby, Robert James Keating Mandel, Christopher Ryan Mandel, and Margaret Faye Morgan; and three great-grandchildren, Jayce Collin Latzer, Jacquelyn Joyce Bojanowski, and Paisley Grace Lisenby; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
