Velfort J. DeArmond, Jr. was born October 30, 1918 in Baywood, LA. He was a Lecture Demonstrator and Manager of the Student Supply Store while attending LSU. De entered the military in 1941 and graduated as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served with the 17th Bomb Group, flying over North Africa and the Mediterranean. De was captured by Italian forces after having to bail out over Sardinia in March, 1943. He escaped while en route to a German POW camp and joined up with Canadian forces. After returning to the States, De met and married Barbara O'Neill in Brownsville, TX. She was the most wonderful wife and mother to their two sons, Barry and David, who were born while De was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. De served in Japan during the Occupation and then in Korea, returning to Washington, DC in 1951. He was CO of the Central Field Office at Wheelus AFB in Tripoli, Libya from 1955-57. Other duty stations include Malstrom AFB, Great Falls, MT and Hill AFB in UT, where he served as CO of a B-57 Squadron. He then served with the Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, CO. De completed his military career in Washington, DC, where he served as Director of the Office of the Air Force Board Structure under the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force at the Pentagon. In 1971, after 31 1/2 years of service, De and Barbara retired in Pensacola, where they enjoyed many years with friends and visiting family. De was a member of the National Air Force Association and his POW service was honored by the Pensacola Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. In Pensacola, he served as a volunteer teacher's aide for challenged students, as president of the local chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and as Flight Captain of the local chapter of the National Daedialian Fraternity of Military Pilots. He was a member of St Paul Catholic Church and was very caring and supportive of his family and his church. We love him and will miss him as long as we live. De is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara, and two sons, Barry Michael of Los Gatos, CA and David Glynn of Pensacola; sisters Dorothy DeArmond Melancon of Greenwell Springs, LA and Barbara Ann DeArmond Forbes (Cecil) of Pride, LA; sister-in-law Gloria Triggs O'Neill of Austin, TX; and many nieces and nephews. The Rosary will be prayed at 4:45pm followed by the visitation until 7:00pm Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am Thursday, March 21, 2013 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors. The family would like to give special thanks to De's caregivers; Carol Atwater, Roxanne Dozier, Wanda Lewis, Margaret Joseph, Peggy Short, Rubye Wilson, Karen Aucoin and Covenant Hospice. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Sherrill, James Carruth, Bill Andrews, Malcolm Strickland and Wayne Epley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, 1700 Conway Drive, Pensacola, FL 32504.
