Commander W. Spencer Butts Jr. USN (Ret.), known as “Slug” to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in Pensacola, FL on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Slug was born into a Navy family in San Diego, CA in 1933. He lived many places in his life, but he always called Pensacola his home.
Slug proudly served in the US Navy graduating from the United States Naval Academy with the class of 1956 and retiring after 30 years of service aboard numerous ships and shore installations, including overseas tours in Japan and Germany. He was proud of his naval service but considered his family as his greatest accomplishment.
Slug possessed a quick wit and a kind soul, making friends with everyone he encountered. He enjoyed many hobbies including antiquing, fishing, treasure hunting, and entertaining family with jokes and card tricks. He enjoyed watching sports, especially Navy and Auburn football games.
Slug is preceded in death by his parents, RADM W. Spencer and Betty Butts.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Sally, who was his constant companion and his rock; his son, Spencer (Saunnie); his daughter, Suzanne (Sashi); his grandchildren, Jessie (Andre), Rachel (Matt), Zach, Isabelle, and Neel; his great grandchildren, Emery, Spencer, Isla, Bryce, Romi, and Mila.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caring staff at Vitas Hospice, especially the dancing queens Sarah and Ronda. We are forever grateful for your kindness and compassion.
Commander W. Spencer Butts Jr. USN (Ret.) will be laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date with full military honors.
