Constance Baker Godfrey, 83, of Pensacola passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2011. Connie was born at old Sacred Heart Hospital on 12th Avenue just before midnight, November 26, 1927 to Minamay Oliver and LT. James E. Baker. Her father having flown from Norfolk, VA., arriving barely in time after a minor air collision en route. From then on his new daughter never liked airplanes and almost never flew in one. As a Navy Junior, she moved often between Pensacola, Coronado, Long Beach, The Canal Zone, Norfolk, VA, Texas and (much later when her Marine bosses took her in their planes). During the war, she spent most of the time in Pensacola with mother and brother "waiting for Bake". After the war, the Bakers fetched up in Oakland, CA and became a split family. College at CAL for Connie and Jimmy. After her marriage broke up, Connie and her mother moved on to Washington D.C. with Jimmy at the Naval Academy. After finishing her degree at George Washington University, she returned home with mom to Pensacola. Then the Marines captured her along with friend Joanne Odea. Which for Connie, meant tours in Texas, Seattle, New Orleans, Headquarter of Marine Corp., Washington D.C., Quantico, and Pensacola on loan. Much later, Connie went into the Marine Corp. Reserves and began her new what was to become career at Pensacola Junior College and attended University of West Florida. She was both administrator and teacher and one to become a second in command in her department. It filled her years as teacher, instructor, administrator and sometime all around "I've got the duty". Not to mention raising Lil, her child and sending her off first to Washington D.C. and then San Diego to further her career. After retirement, Connie had a full and very active life with many friends around her in Pensacola and quite a few when she visited Washington, D.C. All of her careers all her life and all of friends made the whole thing almost a story that anybody would wish for. She was for us the greatest with a daughter, brother, cousin, friends with whom there where many. Connie is survived by her daughter, Lillianne Godfrey; and her younger brother James E. Baker, Jr. both on Pensacola. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00pm Monday, January 10 at Harper Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32504. Funeral Service will be at 10:30am Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Christ Church, with Rev. Fr. Neal Goldsborough officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society.
