Obituary

Jerry "Conway" Hinson, 78, of Pensacola Beach, FL passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 with his loving wife by his side.

Conway was born in McCall Creek, MS on October 7, 1942 to the late John Clifton and Eva Myrtle Hinson. In addition to his parents, Conway is preceded in death by his father-in-law, Wentz Batson.

Conway grew up in Natchez, MS and graduated from Natchez High School in 1960. Following graduation, Conway joined the US Coast Guard, where he trained to be an Electronics Technician. Conway served most of his time in the Coast Guard on isolated duty in the Philippines maintaining a long-range navigation (Loran) Station during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1965 and returned to Natchez where he initially worked as a service technician for Southern Bell.

In 1973, Conway joined IBM as a customer engineer working on a variety of computer systems and printers, then was moved into the role of a system engineer (SE). As an SE, his ability to troubleshoot and resolve difficult system problems earned him many accolades from IBM customers who added their names to the "Conway Admiration Club". Conway was selected to test IBM's AS/400 system in their Rochester laboratory prior to its being brought online giving a head start 'never before found at Release 1 time'. Conway earned many "IBM Means Service" awards and qualified to attend "SE Symposiums" due to his dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction.

Conway (aka JC) loved his time on Pensacola Beach where he was able to enjoy his favorite pastimes, surf fishing from the beach, and working with all his tools in his garage. Shooting a game of darts or pool with his friends became his afternoon fun following retirement from IBM until Parkinson's Disease began to take its toll on him. His quick wit and desire to please remained until the end.

Survivors include his "Sweet Baboo", Melanie Hinson; his siblings, Prentiss (Karen) Hinson, Linda (Buck) Beach, Ted (Angela) Hinson, and Cindy (Blackshear) Snyder; mother-in-law, Marjorie Batson; siblings-in-law Skip (Eva) Batson and Dan (Kathy) Batson; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Due to the current pandemic, a graveside service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, Parkinson Plaza, 135 Parkinson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10305 or Feeding the Gulf Coast, Panhandle Branch, 5709 Industrial Blvd. Milton, FL 32583.
