LtCol David Graham Vest USMC (Retired), 83 passed away on Friday September 7th 2018. He was born on August 29th 1935 in Glasgow, MT. He graduated from Berea High School, Berea OH in 1953 and the University of Missouri in 1957.
David entered the United States Marine Corps in June 1958 when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. In November 1959 David earned his "Wings of Gold" and was designated a Naval Aviator. David had a distinguished 20 year career in the USMC as a fighter pilot primarily flying the F-8 and F-4. His military career highlights include: Combat tour in the Republic of Vietnam from 1967-1968 and Command of VMFA-531 from July 1976-June 1978. His military awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Air medal. He was recognized as USMC aviator of the year in 1971.
Upon completion of his military service David put himself through law school and practiced as a lawyer in Southern California for over 20 years. David's life was dedicated to service for many organizations including the Marine Corps Aviation Association, Marines' Memorial Association San Francisco and the El Toro Historical Association.
David moved to Pensacola, FL in 2003 where he spent his life enjoying his golden years with his many friends. Throughout his life he maintained relationships with family, friends and colleagues near and far. He was a prolific letter (and later email) writer and strove to keep track of the people and organizations he cared about. He provided care for his Brother Miles and took care of his mother Alyce and father George in their later years.
David is survived by his nephew, Col Kevin Vest, USMC Ret. and his niece, Dana VanSinden.
A Funeral Cortege will leave Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 11:45am Friday, October 5, 2018 for the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel for the Memorial Service at 12:30pm, with Chaplain Ken Griffin officiating. Committal Service will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with Full Marine Honors.
