Obituary

Richard "Dickie" Theodore Mead, 97, of Pensacola, FL passed away Sunday, October 27, 2024.

Dickie, a proud 8th generation Pensacolian, was born on September 1, 1927, to Agnes Theodora Hansen and Charles Addison Mead, II in Pensacola, FL. He was the third of four children, preceded by his siblings Charles Addison III and June Elizabeth, and followed by Nancy Caroline. Growing up in Beach Haven on the west side of town, he assisted his family at their diner located at "The Circle". He completed his high school education at Pensacola High School, which was situated on North Palafox during his time.

In 1946, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1947. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at the University of Florida before becoming one of the pioneering male students at Florida State University after its transition to a co-educational institution.

During his visits to Pensacola, he met Lynette Marie Traxler, whom he married in November 1957 at St. Christopher's Church. This ceremony was significant as Christ Church downtown was undergoing renovations at the time.

Lynn and Dick had two children, Richard Britt Mead and Susan Mead Bonsignore. Dickie played a pivotal role in establishing the Scenic Hills Country Club and even became its first club champion in 1958. Throughout his professional life, he was involved in various ventures, including Lamar Advertising and owning Mead Advertising, selling insurance and real estate. In his later years, even at the age of 97, he remained active in keeping an eye out for real estate opportunities and embodying his enduring mantra of maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA).

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lynette Traxler Mead; his parents, Agnes Theodora and Charles Addison Mead II, and his siblings Charles Addison III, June Braun, and Nancy Hereford.  Now they are all together again.

He is survived by his son, Britt; daughter, Susan (Bobby); grandchildren, Tina Hall (Kyle) and Nikki; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved very much.

A visitation will be held 2:00pm-4:00pm Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral Service will be held 10:30am Monday, November 4, 2024, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Pastor Channing Kearney officiating. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Katherine Price and her nurse, Cynthia, for always going above and beyond in Dick's care; People's Home Health and Hospice, for many years of care and especially the last 2 months; and all of Dick's other doctors that took the very best care of him.

Dickie had the kindest heart and felt good that he was making an impact when he donated to several organizations. In lieu of flowers, consider donating in his memory to your favorite charity. His local favorites were First Tee Gulf Coast, 3924 W. Navy Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32507 and Redeemer Lutheran, 333 Commerce St, Pensacola, FL 32507 where he was a charter member. Everyone should consider living as Dick did: "Use your PMA- Positive Mental Attitude and pass it on". A good positive mantra to live by.
