Don Jay Caton, former City Attorney of Pensacola, passed away May 7, 2020, of complications from a stroke he suffered late 2014.

Don was born December 12, 1941, and was a native of Pensacola. After graduating from Pensacola High School in 1959, he attended FSU, playing tennis all four years while earning his bachelor's degree. He went on to follow in his father's footsteps by receiving his law degree from Stetson University. After several years in private practice, he served as City Attorney for Pensacola for 40 years.

He was an accomplished bridge player becoming a Life Master at the age of 16, the youngest in the United States at that time. He was also an avid national level duplicate bridge player, representing the USA in the 1986 World Bridge Championships in Paris.

He was a lifelong tennis player, who, among his many tennis accomplishments, ranked number one in Florida, in 1955, in singles and doubles in the 15-and-under age-group, and was a top player for FSU from 1962-65. He was very honored when he was inducted into the Pensacola Sports Hall of Fame.

Don was married to the love of his life, Marion, for 47 years. He loved his weekly lunches with the ROMEOs (retired old men eating out) who were a group of graduates from PHS. He also loved playing tennis with the Kellenberger Crowd, first at Pensacola Racquet Club and then at Roger Scott Tennis Center. He was known for his witty, conservative letters to the Pensacola News Journal.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Dave Caton, and brother, Larry Caton.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marion Caton; brother, Bruce Caton; daughters, Sherry Peercy (Scott), and Wynne Thomas; step-children, Tommy Marr, Jr., Lynn Cain (Frank), Bruce Marr (Mary Helen), Tara Woodfin (Greg), Gina Taylor (Jeff); 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Don's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Don's memory to Heights Baptist Church, 600 Pickens Avenue, 32503.
