Sgt. Major Donald Raye Berna, USMC (ret.), 84, of Pensacola, FL passed away Friday, October 24, 2014. He was born in Oney, OK and lived in Pensacola after he retired as a Sergeant Major in the US Marine Corps after 30 years and 26 days of honorable service. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He also retired from the State of Florida as Personnel Supervisor at the Santa Rosa Island Authority. He earned his AA degree from Pensacola Junior College. He was a charter life member of the US Marine Corps Distinguished Shooters Association. He was a Past President and was currently an Honorary Vice President of the Pensacola Rifle and Pistol Club. His military decorations include a Bronze Star Medal with a Combat "V" for valor, Combat Action Ribbon, Distinguished Marksman and Pistol Shot Badges. He is preceded in death by parents, Elam and Carrie Berna; brothers, Jerry Berna and E.A. Berna, Jr. Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara Berna; son, Major Paul A. Berna, USMC (ret.) (Linda) of Jacksonville, FL; daughters, Donna Rochelle Sternik (Kenneth) of Saucier, MS and Yvonne Berna (Christopher Borelli) of Roselle Park, NJ; sisters, Bernice Proffitt of Granbury, TX and Joyce Abel of Hico, TX and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 5-7pm Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Graveside Service with full Marine Honors will be held 11:00 Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Barrancas National Cemetery with Chaplain Ken Griffin officiating. Active Pallbearers will be USMC Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be BGen. Bjorkland, USMC (ret.), Col. Anderson, USMC (ret.), Col. Taylor, USMC (ret.), Maj. Warfield, USMC (ret.), Maj. Berna, USMC (ret.), Sgt. Maj. Hyatt, USMC (ret.), Sgt. Maj. Melton, USMC (ret.) and MSgt. Moak, USMC (ret.). The family would like to give a special thanks to Select Specialty Hospital, Dr. Castro, RN Meghan Chiappetta and the Drs. and staff at Sacred Heart Intensive Care Unit.
