L. Donald Rushing, 87, died early in the morning on Friday, April 3, 2015 from a stroke. He passed away surrounded by his loving family. Don was born in St. Petersburg, FL on August 16, 1927. He moved to Pensacola at an early age and grew up in Brent. Don graduated Pensacola High School in 1945 and joined the Merchant Marines. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the US Air Force, which enabled him to go to University of Florida on the GI Bill. He graduated in 1950 with a BSBA and was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Don's first job out of UF (October 1950) was with Fisher-Brown Insurance. On his application he wrote, "I plan to make insurance my life work" and he did. In 2014, he retired after 64 years of employment at Fisher-Brown. Don was a long standing member of Pensacola Country Club (President in 1986) and an avid golfer. He had a passion for University of Florida athletics and the New Orleans Saints. He loved his family, his friends, Fisher-Brown, his dogs and his roses. Don was member of Downtown Rotary, Fiesta of Five Flags (Knight 1968), Order of Tristan, Rebellaries and the Irish Politician Club. For the last 17 years, he was also a member of the Burlingame Country Club in Sapphire, NC. Don is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara (Bobbie) Rushing; their children, Robert Keith Rushing (and his wife, Jennifer) and Reid Wesley Rushing (and his wife, Kristine); their grandchildren, Mia Rushing, Sarah Rushing and Robert (Robby) Rushing, II; and their step-grandchildren, Kyle Ott and Mathew Karsten. Don is also survived by his oldest living son, Michael Scott Rushing; his sister, Edna Wallace (and her husband, Charles) and many nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis DeCalb and Juanita Dorris Rushing; his brother, Dewey (and his wife, Margaret) and his children, Lewis D. Rushing, Jr. 1956-1973, Kirstan Rushing 1957-1994 and Lynn Rushing Bailey 1954-2010. A private family memorial was held Sunday, April 5, 2015.
