Obituary

Doris Glick died peacefully in her sleep October 15, 2010 at Covenant Hospice after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church of Pensacola on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:00pm. She was a great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Whether the scent of fresh bread she baked every Friday for her family, or the smile that could light up the world of a niece or nephew, Doris always created an environment of comfort and clarity for those she loved. Beyond those enduring Mom skills, she brought a deep and broad set of philosophical, moral and religious perspectives to provide comfort and guidance of her children and extended family. Doris always led by example, and probably her biggest investment and pleasure was the relationship she had with her husband, Lester Glick. They were an impressive team whether raising a family or creating programs and materials for various family life programs in their churches and non-profits. Mom and Dad brought their experience and expertise together in a number of books, programs and counseling on family life and marriage as well. Starting programs at University Baptist, Maximo Presbyterian, and Bahia Vista Mennonite to improve and enrich the spiritual and practical lives of families in all of those congregations. Many of the women in Doris extended family have recently shared the great influence in independence of thought and action that Doris had on their lives as further evidenced in this obituary by the number of women who have kept their own last names. Beyond her family, Doris always became a pillar in the social and spiritual communities she joined. Her clarity of vision, bias for action, and fierce love of all Gods children always invigorated those around her. In Syracuse, she co-chaired a task force to build bridges between a her suburban church and an inner-city church. Not content to just lead, Doris often filled her kitchen with inner-city kids giving them experiences of security and comfort they might not otherwise have had. She spent time with those kids parents, listening to their concerns, advocating for them in various government offices, and just being with them. Doris, along with Lester, was committed to an active senior life, even temporarily relocating to the site of the devastation after Hurricane Andrew to provide counseling services and spending many months leading housing rebuilding efforts for Mennonite Disaster Service elsewhere in Florida. Again, not content to just lead from afar, Doris on one occasion rolled up her sleeves and did the cooking for over 100 volunteers for almost three weeks. Doris Glick, Mennonite to her core, would not claim Heavenly privilege based on her works and deeds, but none the less always waded in to every situation without hesitation to make it better and a clearer reflection of Gods love for all of us. After 86 rich years from an impoverished farm girl to world traveler and activist, Doris embodies the passage Lester chose to close his memoirs with. In my fathers house there are many rooms; if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back and take you home to be with me. As my father has loved me, so I love you " my commandment is this; Love one another as I have loved you. Doris Glick was born November 17, 1923 in Grantsville, Garret County MD. She was born to Harry E. Miller and Luella Shetler Miller. She graduated from Goshen College in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics and Nutrition and married Lester Glick in 1947. Lester passed away in 2003. Doris is survived by four children, Ron Glick, Dr. Cris Glick (Eddie Guillot Jr), Priscilla Clark (Lane Holmes), and Byron Glick (Michele Gast) and eight grandchildren, Chris Glick, Mathew Glick, Daniel Glick, Mathew Puckett, Michael Puckett, Megan Puckett, Shane Clark (Dori) and Tina Clark (Ruben Vigil). Cherished second generation spouses include Eddie Guillot, Lane Holmes and Michele Gast. Doriss surviving brothers are Allen (Jean) Miller, Samuel Miller and James (Anna) Miller and sister in law Mitzy Miller. Despite her great love of flowers, Doris would surely request a more pragmatic memorial in the form of donations to Goshen College, Goshen Indiana Attn: Development Office, 1700 S. Main Street, Goshen, IN 46526. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
