Obituary

Doris Shirreffs Keene was born July 7, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, and died August 23, 2021, in Pensacola, FL. She was 98 years old.

Mrs. Keene graduated from Austin High in Chicago, Illinois, attended Coe College, and graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with  degrees in English Literature, Journalism, French, and Spanish. She attended graduate school at Northwestern University in Chicago and obtained a post graduate degree in secondary education from Iowa Wesleyan University. Upon graduation from college, Mrs. Keene worked for DoAll Corporation and Brach Candy Company in Chicago, Illinois. After her marriage in 1949, Mrs. Keene became a homemaker, teacher and commercial real estate broker.

Mrs. Keene was a community activist and volunteered throughout her life prior to retirement and relocation to Pensacola, Florida, in 1988, including membership in AAUW (American Association of University Women), National Panhellenic Conference, Kappa Delta Sorority, the DeKalb Women's Club, the League of Women Voters, Bellevue Library Board, her Congregational church Circle, various other volunteer organizations, and was a room mother, Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, and Sunday School director for her children.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years who passed away October 15, 2019, Reid Wesley Keene; her parents, George and Rose Shirreffs; brothers, George and Gordon Shirreffs; and sisters, Doris Shirreffs (infant) and Lanell (Marge) Massman.

She is survived by her son, Bruce Keene (Bonnie) of Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin; daughter, Laura Keene (Barry Beroset) of Pensacola; son, Ross Keene (Stacy) of Pensacola; grandson, Wade Beroset (Frederique) of Pensacola; grandson, John Beroset (Katie) of Gulf Breeze; granddaughters, Olivia Keene and Gwyneth Keene of Pensacola; great grandsons, Drew and Jack Beroset of Gulf Breeze; great granddaughters, Isabelle and Claire Beroset of Pensacola; and nieces Lynn Ardis and Gayle Thompson.
