Dodie was born on January 28, 1936, in St. Paul, MN to Earling S. and Dorothy Sutliff Reque. She grew up in Minneapolis and after graduating from high school, she attended the University of Minnesota. Dodie moved to Dallas, TX, to work as a flight attendant for Braniff Airlines where she met and married Laurens "Juicy" Holmes. Dodie and Laurens moved to Oxford, MS, where he graduated from the University of Mississippi with a pharmacy degree and she worked in banking. They moved to Florida and lived in several towns before settling in Pensacola in 1965. She attended and graduated from the University of West Florida with a degree in Psychology and Learning Disabilities.

In 1976, Dodie started teaching learning disabled students in middle school and continued teaching for 14 years. After 36 years of marriage and 5 children together, Juicy died of cancer at age 58. Dodie renewed her relationship with high school sweetheart, Leo Hickey, and they were married for 23 years until his passing in 2020. Dodie enjoyed reading, playing bridge, dancing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Dodie and Leo loved traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and Asia and enjoyed snow skiing with the Pensacola Ski Club. In her free time, she volunteered at Baptist Hospital, and participated on the Women's Board. Dodie was initiated in the P.E.O., where women motivate, educate and celebrate women. She felt fortunate to be involved in a wonderful organization with an exceptional group of women.
