IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Huggins
Jordan
January 19, 1926 – August 23, 2023
Our mother, Dorothy Huggins Jordan went to be with her beloved husband, Bertis Benton Jordan on August 23, 2023, at the age of 97 years. She lived a good life, and it was a life well lived. Mom was born in 1926 in the small southern town of McKenzie, AL where she met Bert and attended school together. After leaving McKenzie for college, Mom attended Judson College in Marion, AL and was on both the basketball and synchronized swimming teams and graduated with a degree in Biology. She married Bert and they moved to Birmingham, AL where she worked several years at Shades Mountain High School teaching Botany, working to help pay Bert's way through medical school. When Bert completed medical school they moved to Huntsville, AL and Bert began his practice. There they made many dear friends who were close to them for the remainder of their lives. They both were big University of Alabama fans, Bert's Alma Mater, and followed the Roll Tide Team around the South for many, many years attending football games with friends. In 1969, they moved to what was then the small town of Gulf Breeze, FL at the urging of Max Jordan, Bert's brother. They settled in on Beach Drive and built an extraordinary life with wonderful neighbors. It was a very unique time and place in their lives. They became fast friends with many of their neighbors in and around Gulf Breeze where they built a lifetime of wonderful memories with them. Dot enjoyed playing tennis, gardening, reading and being with family and friends. They were longstanding members of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Pensacola Opera, Saints and Sinners as well as Driftwood Garden Club, Book Ends Book Club, Pensacola Yacht Club and a founding member of the Gulf Breeze Historical Society. Dot made so many lovely friends and she and Bert had so many good times with them in and around Gulf Breeze and sailing on their sailboat, the Sayaonara, both locally and on adventurous trips as far away as the Bahamas. They were avid travelers and enjoyed many trips abroad to Europe, The UK, Canada, China, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean Islands as well as throughout the USA to National Parks and many cities. She loved her Beach Drive home where she said many times the only way she wanted to leave her home was feet first and that was exactly as she wished.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bert; son, Richard Benton Jordan; sister, Jane Schrubbe and brother, Harold Huggins.
Dorothy is survived by her sister, Jaqueline Fiveash of Northport, AL; sister-in-law, Joan Huggins Trew of Ft. Worth, TX; daughters, Jill Jordan Lee (Bill) and Jennifer Jordan Fort (Johnny); son, James Randall Jordan (Allison); grandchildren, Jordan Lee (Ashley), Randy Lee (Carly), Emily Thacker, Cary Jordan, Savannah DeLoach, Lacey DeLoach, Avery Jordan and Rachel Jordan; great grandchildren, Molly Thacker, Amelia, Barrett, and Sawyer Lee, Finn and Scout Lee. She also loved spending time with her many nieces and nephews who would often come to visit her in her later years on the back porch that she so enjoyed.
We would like to thank Judit with Covenant Hospice for her excellent medical care of our mother as well as her outstanding and much loved caregivers, Gloria Cook, Mel Chandler, Kendall Kubik, Darlene Adams and Jane Pugh. Each and every one took such outstanding care of our mother in their own special and unique way. Mom loved them and enjoyed her time with all.
