Dorothy E. Smith, 80, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. She was born in Detroit, Tipton Co., TN on July 27, 1934 to Mike and Effie Wilson. Dorothy attended various schools in Tipton County, and she married V. J. "Smitty" Smith in 1956 and was married for 51 years before his death in June, 2007. Together they had one son, and lost two daughters at birth. Dorothy followed her husband in the Navy for 30 years, working on several bases in different capacities. While her husband was stationed in Pensacola, she decided to return to school and received her G.E.D. and a nursing degree from Pensacola Jr. College in 1970. She worked at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital for 27 years and volunteered with the Pink ladies until she retired in 1998. Dorothy and "Smitty" traveled the US extensively for several years, visiting all 50 states and Canada and Mexico while along the way visiting a long list of relatives along the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, V. J. "Smitty" Smith; brother, William Fred Wilson; sister-in-law, Maryann Wilson; sisters, Cornella Poole, Jean Andrews, Annie Ruth Hewlett; brothers-in-law, Glenn Smith and James Smith; nieces, Chelsea Wilson, Ruthie Smith and nephew, Todd Smith. Dorothy is survived by her son, Steve Smith of Pensacola; sisters, Beth Jaimez of Horn Lake, MS and Carolyn Hewlett of New Smyrna Beach, FL; brothers, Johnny Wilson and Ricky Wilson of Bristol, VA, Jerry Wilson of Garland, TX, J. W. Wilson of Covington, TN, brother and sister-in-law, Helen and Leland Pope of Huntington Beach, CA and numerous loved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; special friends, Carol and Chuck Christian, Henrietta Calhoun, Gary and Sharon Penrod along with semi-adopted sons, Gary, Kenny and Danny Harris and numerous co-workers and friends met along the way of her life. A Funeral Cortege will depart Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 11:00am Wednesday, July 8, 2015 for a Graveside Service at 11:45am at Barrancas National Cemetery with Chaplain Ken Griffin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or any other foundation dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals.
