Douglas Montgomery Heidel died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 29, 2021
Born December 16, 1955 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and grew up in Lovington, New Mexico
Doug joined the Navy at the age of 17 and spent 25 years serving his country. He was a Navy Chief, Corpsman specializing in Urology. He served alongside infantry Marines of the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd Marine Divisions, spanning across the globe from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Twenty-nine Palms, California to Okinawa Japan and South Korea. Of all his duty stations, his favorite was The Royal Air Force Base Edzell Scotland. Doug spent three years in Scotland touring castles and beautiful golf courses, and became very close to a group of people whom remain lifelong friends. . His naval awards include: Naval & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation and various other awards.
After retiring from the Navy, Doug moved to Guntersville, Alabama, where he met the love of his life, Mary. Doug then finished his Bachelor's Degree from The University of Alabama, Huntsville. Doug and Mary eventually moved back to Pensacola, Florida to retire and with their feet in the beautiful white sand of Pensacola Beach, said "I Do". Doug enjoyed his retirement by playing golf and volunteering at various organizations in Pensacola.
Doug was preceded in death by his Father, Haywood Heidel (1995) Mother, Leona Rae Heidel (2005) and Sister, Cindy Heidel Rhoden (1997)
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Heidel, Sister, Jan Heidel-Staelens (Ron) of Rogers, Arkansas Son, Christopher Heidel (Nicole) of Garden Grove, California and two precious grandchildren, Summer and Owen
Doug's wishes were to be cremated and have his ashes interred at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery Naval Air Station, Pensacola. A Funeral Cortege will depart Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 1:00pm for a Graveside Service at 1:30pm Friday, April 9, 2021, with Rev. Mark Dees officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice 5041 N. 12 th Ave Pensacola, FL 32504
