IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas Evans
Howie
June 9, 1933 – March 25, 2024
Douglas Evans Howie, affectionately known as Doug, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on March 25, 2024 at his residence on Innerarity Point Rd, Perdido Key, FL. Doug embodied the charm of a true southern gentleman with all the wit and sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him. He leaves behind a void that will be deeply felt by those whose lives he touched.
Doug's love story began at Tulane University, where he met the love of his life, Florence Frazier O'Ferrall of Pensacola, FL. Their journey together began on June 5, 1954, when they exchanged vows at Christ Episcopal Church. Together, they navigated the twists and turns of life, raising two children, Frazier Jane and Thomas O'Ferrall Howie.
Enlisting in the Marine Corps at the tender age of 17, Doug served his country in Korea for approximately 3 years before embarking on a successful professional journey with Shell Oil Company in New Orleans. In 1964, he planted roots in Pensacola, founding Howie Oil Company and dedicating over 20 years to the oil business.
Beyond his corporate endeavors, Doug's philanthropic endeavors illuminated his generous spirit. Whether cheerfully ringing the Christmas Bucket Bell for the Salvation Army or leading the charge in local Mardi Gras festivities, he became a beloved figure in Escambia County's social circles. His dedication to community service was further underscored by his roles as President of the Petroleum Marketers Association and as Florida State Commissioner Department of Veterans Affairs, appointed by Governor Claude Kirk.
Doug is survived by his son Tommy Howie (Cynthia); his adored grandchildren, Thomas O'Ferrall Howie, Jr. (Jordan) of Greenville, SC, and Griffith Boone Howie (Meagan) of Greenville, SC, along with his cherished great-granddaughters, Caroline and Cameron.
To know Doug was to love Doug; no one was a stranger in his presence. He relished a night out at the Point Restaurant, where good company and hearty laughs abounded. His infectious laughter, especially when feigning comprehension of something he didn't quite catch, endeared him to all. Doug was the life of every social event, effortlessly earning the title of "everyone's friend". His unwavering support, whether in times of joy or hardship, made him a beacon of strength and love.
Doug lived his life with devotion to his family, faith, and friends, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness. He was a devout member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Lillian, AL, where contributions to the church endowment fund in his memory would be gratefully received (please contact the church at 251-961-2505 for details).
A private family graveside service will be followed by a Celebration of Life gathering at the Howie residence in the near future. Let's raise a glass to Doug - a man whose life was a testament to love, laughter, and the enduring impact of Douglas Evans Howie.
