Obituary

On Saturday, October 26, 2024, an unexpected and tragic single car automobile accident claimed the life of our beloved Maria Leilani "Lani" Sigmon (68yo). Subsequently, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, her husband, Douglas "Doug" Kirk Sigmon (62yo), passed away due to complications from the same accident.

Lani, a native of Manila, Philippines, was born on November 14, 1955. The loves of her life were Doug and their son, John David Sigmon. Her calling in life included a passion for caregiving and service to others in the health industry. She garnered an undergraduate degree in Foreign Service from Lyceum University in Manila and a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) credential from Pacific Coast College in Chula Vista, CA, and went on to complete a 19-year LVN health service career at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, CA.

Lani cherished attending church with her husband and son, doting on family pets, and spending time gardening. She found great joy in traveling with Doug, and hosting laughter-filled conversations with close friends and family. Lani had a radiant presence and infectious laugh, and a remarkable gift for making others feel seen, heard, and valued. She was kind and compassionate, and left everyone she met with a warm, lasting, and loving memory. Lani is preceded in death by her parents, Rogelio Cruz, Sr., and Asuncion Reyes Cruz.

Doug, a native of Charleston, SC, was born on December 17, 1961, and subsequently relocated to Wildwood, FL. He proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring as Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician Collection. His Navy career included deployments aboard USS Fox and USS Independence, myriad submarines, as well as assignments in San Diego, CA, and Misawa, Japan. Doug was committed to lifelong learning, as evidenced by his dedicated pursuit and completion of numerous Information Technology (IT) certifications and college courses, all aimed at providing a better life for his family—a devotion fondly remembered by his son, John, who often witnessed his Dad studying late into the night.

Doug shared Lani's devotion and love for their son, John. He found great joy in watching his son play soccer, cheering for the Miami Dolphins, Miami Hurricanes, and San Diego Padres, immersing himself in Sci-Fi and Fantasy classics, golfing, watching sumo, and online role-playing games. Doug will always be remembered for his strength of character, integrity, tireless work ethic, generosity, servant leadership, and his playful and inclusive nature that brought people together in laughter. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and connection.

Doug is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lani, and his parents, Willis McKee Folsom and Janice Fay Alman. Left to cherish the memories of Doug and Lani is their son, John David Sigmon.
