FLIGHT LOG 07.01.2020, Pensacola, FL: It was "flaps down" for Lt. Commander Ed Edwards USN (ret), as he executes a perfect soft, carrier landing on the deck of the USS Eternity.
On deck, waiting for him, was his beloved flight crew of his wife, Betty Claire Nobles Edwards, grandmother, Elizabeth "Modie" Holzer, mother, Elizabeth Holzer Edwards Cartwright, father, C. E. Edwards, Sr. along with various hunting dogs and pets.
Born on December 26, 1930, in Pensacola, FL, he graduated from Marion Military Institute, Duke University, Auburn University and Troy State University where he earned two bachelors and a masters degree.
Serving in the US Navy as a Commissioned Officer, he earned his Navy Wings and proudly served his country for 25 years on various naval bases and aircraft carriers all over the world.
Back at his home base Earth, he is survived by four children: Polly Neiderloh (Chuck), Rick Dye (Patti), Chuck Edwards (Cheri) and Mike Edwards (Sheri). He was "Papa" to 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Ed loved his family and spending time with his childhood sweetheart and wife, Betty. He treasured his many adventures as a Navy pilot. He was a conservationist, managing his family farm in Wing, AL all his life. After retiring from the Navy, he served as a teacher at Pensacola State University, University of West Florida (Small Business Development Center) and Troy State University. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, Gideon and member of Gadsden Street United Methodist Church.
Due to current circumstances with COVID-19, there will be private family services held on Friday, July 10, 2020 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jim Dietz officiating. Interment will follow at Roberts Cemetery with Navy honors.
Active Pallbearers will be Mike Edwards, Matthew Edwards, Ryan Edwards, Chuck Edwards
Honorary Pallbearers will be former Navy flying buddies and family members unable to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
