Ellsworth John "EJ" Sacks, Jr., 89, of Pensacola, FL passed from this earth on Tuesday, February 9, 2021.
EJ was born December 29, 1931 in Leavenworth, KS and raised in Biloxi, MS. Upon graduating from Mississippi State University, he entered Tulane Medical School. EJ began his Naval career in his last year in medical school in 1956. Upon graduating in June of 1957, he did his internship at the USNH Bremerton, WA. After 30 years of active military service as a Naval Medical Officer, Flight Surgeon, and Instructor of Flight Surgeons at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute (NAS Pensacola), he retired for the first time in 1987. He was recalled to serve until his final discharge in 1993. EJ ultimately proudly served his country 37 total years. In retirement, he was an active parishioner of St. Christopher Episcopal Church and an active member of the Pensacola Power Squadron. He also worked at the West Florida Hyperbaric Medicine Center.
He and his wife, Lynn settled into his final years of retirement as residents of the Summer Vista Retirement Community in Pensacola. EJ lived a fascinating multi-layered life. He was a lovable man whose smile lit up any room. He died peacefully cradled in the arms of our Lord. We love you. Rest in Peace.
EJ is preceded in death by his first wife, Elaine May Nygard Sacks.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn; 10 children, Ellsworth III "Skip" Sacks (Colleen), Eric Sacks (Rose), Patricia Sickert (Mark), Dana Thomas (Michael), Renee Lewis (Dylan), Diana McGuffie, Cindy Walsh (Bill), Sharon Terrell, Darien Terrell, and Angie Mahurin; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; close family friend and caregiver, Susie Jefferies; as well as his beloved pet, Sam.
Visitation will be held 1:30pm until the Funeral Service to begin 2:00pm Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Susan Sowers officiating. Private family interment will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery with full Navy Honors at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital and the staff of Summer Vista.
