Eleanor Rita Gander, 75, of Pensacola, Florida was called home to Heaven on Thursday, November 19, 2015.
Born in Warwick, RI, Ellie was employed as a manager at the Navy Exchange in Quonset Point. There she met the love her life and began her second career as a proud Navy wife (toughest job in the Navy). Later she became a co-owner of All American Hero restaurant and then a receptionist, payroll clerk and bookkeeper at the Montessori School. She loved playing tennis, reading, baking and playing board games, especially Scrabble.
She was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Central Pensacola. Ellie was recognized as a Distinguished President and received the Zeller Award from Kiwanis. She also served with her husband as the Zone Administer for the Florida District Key Club.
Ellie, strong in her Faith, was active in many church ministries including Special Eucharistic Minister to the Sick at Baptist Manor for 25 years, facilitator for RCIA, FOCUS and INSEARCH, and a part of the Charismatic Renewal for many years.
Ellie was preceded in death by her mother, Gilda Jane; father, William Jane and brother, William Jane.
She is survived by her husband, John P. Gander, Jr. of Pensacola; her 5 children, daughter, Elizabeth Scott (Lance), daughter, Anne Marie Stopper (John), daughter, Nancy Patrick (Larry), son, John P. Gander, III (Katie), son, Mark Gander (Kelly) and 12 grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Marilyn Jarbeau and Carol Davis.
A Celebration of Ellie's life will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 with a Funeral Mass at 11am at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (1212 E. Moreno St., Pensacola, FL 32503). A procession will immediately follow the Mass to NAS Pensacola for burial services at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:15pm.
