IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eleanor "Lennie"
Landis
September 21, 1919 – January 25, 2018
Eleanor "Lennie" Landis, 98, died peacefully on January 25, 2018 after a long and adventurous life.
A native of Albany, NY, valedictorian of her high school class, she met her future husband, Bill at Alfred University where they both starred in amateur theatricals. She completed her bachelor degree in 1941, married in 1942, and embarked on a teaching career while her husband flew in the China-Burma-India Theater during the war. Their first of four sons was born in 1945, and as the young family grew they also traveled widely, first with the Air Force and then later on their own. She lived in six states, taught school in four of them, earned her masters degree from Alaska Methodist University, and retired from the Anchorage School District as a children's librarian.
Moving to Pensacola, Bill and Lennie enjoyed seven wonderful years together in their home on Perdido Bay before Bill passed away. Always active in community life, Lennie joined the Retired Officers Wives and Widows Association and the Pensacola Symphony Guild, volunteered at the US Navy Hospital and the Naval Aviation Museum, and served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church. Moving to Azalea Trace in 2004, she served on the Resident Council, the Library Board, and the Hospital and Health Care Committees. She traveled with enthusiasm her whole life, particularly enjoying trips to Africa, China, Russia, and Scotland. Well into her 90s she was still returning annually to Panama and her beloved state of Alaska. Yet ask her what she loved the most and she would have said, "my family."
Lennie was preceded in death by her husband, William Landis and her son, Richard Landis.
She leaves behind three sons, Robert, David, and Paul; four daughters-in-law, Pauline, Rebecca, Kay, and Marietta; her Pensacola neighbors and friends; and many others around the world whose lives she has graced by her interest and example.
Memorial Service will be held 10:00am Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Azalea Trace Auditorium.
